Племя шань с переселением в долину Хуанхэ стало называться «инь» (Yin). Оно осело на новых землях, изгнав после кровопролитной борьбы жившее здесь ранее племя «цян» или «ся» (Xia).
Старейшины шань-инь из племенных вождей превратились в единоличных правителей. Среди подданных укреплялось представление о них как о «сыновьях Неба», получивших власть от божественных сил. «Чжан-Го» — «Срединное государство» — так стали именовать свою страну сами жители Китая.
Государство Шань-Инь, просуществовав с 1766 по 1122 г. до н. э., попало под власть племени чжоу, владыки которого, правившие с 1122 по 247 г. до н. э., называли себя ванами-царями. Первым из них был У-ван — «Царь-воитель».
Затем под натиском соседних племен и собственной родовой знати Чжоуское царство распалось на уделы. Это время (с 770 по 403 г. до н. э.) жители Срединного государства называли порой «Весны и Осени».
Правители уделов сражались друг с другом и соседями. Почти два века (с 403 по 221 г. до н. э.) продолжалась эпоха Воюющих царств.
Победителем из войны вышло царство Цинь (Qin).
