Цель настоящего пособия – помочь учащимся овладеть системой однокоренных и производных слов (word families), составляющих основу общекультурного словарного запаса английского языка. Материалом для данного учебного пособия являются увлекательные тексты по разнообразной общеобразовательной тематике, взятые из энциклопедических изданий, современных учебников английского языка (уровень FCE и TOEFL), а также из научно-популярной периодики.
Упражнения по развитию лексики являются органичной частью самих текстов. Такая презентация материала, соединяющая информационный и лексический аспекты, отражает новый методический подход к освоению производных слов (derivatives).
Пособие состоит из 12 разделов, каждый из которых включает 12-15 текстов, направленных на системное освоение общекультурной и общенаучной лексики. Все тексты снабжены ключами (в виде отдельного приложения), что позволяет использовать данное пособие как для аудиторной, так и для самостоятельной работы.
Пособие предназначено для студентов вузов, а также широкого круга лиц, самостоятельно изучающих английский язык. Пособие может быть использовано для подготовки к сдаче экзаменов FCE, IELTS и TOEFL.

Prehistory
Prehistory refers to human cultures before the use of write (1). Human history begins with the emerge (2) of the early human hominids approximate (3) 3,500 000 years ago. This ‘Three Age System’ of class (12), which was published in 1836 by the Denmark (13) archeologist Christian Thomsen, is based on the dominate (14) materials used by early humans for tools and weapons: Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.
