There is a blog for everything nowadays and many people have personal blogs just about their daily lives.

Anybody can start a blog, and they’re great if you have a story to tell! You will have the chance to gain subscribers and maybe become internet famous.

Unfortunately, the volume of the book did not allow to include the majority of articles and reviews from the regional media and blogosphere.

Similar to crowdfunding, crowdsourcing is when a group of people come together to complete a task or think of an idea. A lot of businesses use crowdsourcing to complete work for really low prices online.

Crowdsourcing is a fantastic invention thanks to the internet and the power of technology.

Ebook – электронная книга

Reading ebooks is very convenient on a trip, the only disadvantage is that sometimes you can’t always charge your reader when it’s empty.

My feed is full of annoying cat pictures, so maybe I should unsubscribe from some of the groups and spend some time organizing my feed.

Flash mob – флешмоб, массовая акция

There was an amazing salsa flash mob arranged via the Internet: people met in a popular place all at the same time, and when a signal was given, they began to perform a dance together.

Lifecasting – прямая трансляция своей жизни в интернете

Lifecasters broadcast their lives in different ways: they might wear a camera to show you what they are seeing as if you were seeing it with their eyes or they have somebody to follow them around with a camera just like on television.

Meme – мем, единица культурной информации (высказывание, картинка, видео или звукоряд)

Facebook is one site where memes are all over the place, you can’t scroll through your newsfeed now without seeing a meme.

Moblog – мобильный блог

Often moblogs are shorter than normal blogs but they are published more regularly as mobile bloggers don’t have to be in front of a computer to post. Other features of moblogs include videos and photos, as bloggers normally use cameraphones to make their entries more interesting and more engaging.

Streaming media – потоковые мультимедиа

Many people use streaming media to keep up with events like sports games.

In Asia, some gaming events can be streamed around the world to millions of people.

Trending – очень модный или популярный (особенно в Твиттере)

That’s crazy! Our team is trending on Twitter!

Troll – человек, размещающий грубые или провокационные сообщения, «тролль»

These people online are saying nasty things about me; they are so annoying, and I will report them as trolls.

Chat – обмен сообщениями в сети в режиме реального времени

Online chat may refer to any kind of communication over the Internet that offers a real-time exchange of messages.

Chat room – место в сети для групповой дискуссии

The young girls have their own activity groups and a debate and chat room on the Internet.

Emoticon – пиктограмма, изображающая эмоцию

The use of smileys and other emoticons to quickly convey human emotions is nice but can become annoying at times.

Messaging/ instant messaging/ IM – система мгновенного обмена сообщениями

Instant messages are a nice quick way to get information to your friend, especially when it’s not convenient to talk.

URL – единообразный локатор (определитель местонахождения) ресурса URL stands for Unique Resource Locator; it is the technical term for a web address.

Viral/to go viral – вирусный; подверженный быстрому распространению в соцсетях

I was watching that viral video with the cats and the trampoline, and the site just froze up and crashed on me.

Wiki – веб-сайт, содержимое которого пользователи могут самостоятельно изменять с помощью инструментов, предоставляемых самим сайтом

The name "Wiki" was chosen by Ward Cunningham – the creator of the first Wiki. It is a shortened form of "wiki- wiki", the Hawaiian word for quick.

Subscribe – подписаться на услугу в Интернете

You can subscribe by RSS feed or by email to receive news updates and breaking stories.

‘Like’ – лайк,  рекомендация на тот или иной сайт, страницу, статью в интернете, друзьям в социальных сетях

Tag /hashtag – отметить; метка для группировки элементов

Hashtags served a very important purpose on Twitter in the early days – you could create one tied to a specific trend, event, or topic, and filter out everything that didn’t relate to the hashtag.

Today hashtags have grown into a phenomenon of their own and truly become part of our culture of online discussions.

Tweet – короткое сообщение в Твиттере (длиной в 140 символов)

Today all media quoted President Trump’s tweet on transgender policy.

Exercise 2. Match the words in Column A with their definitions in Column B. Make up your own sentences with these words.

Cloud	A person trying to make people angry or emotional on the Internet by harassing them or commenting about them on social media
Blog	Usually pictures with words on them, involving famous people or specially invented characters
To go viral	Activities of a company or a website to gain publicity on a massive scale
Trending	An electronic book that can be read on a screen or on a mobile device
Chat	When a group of people come together to help other people raise money for their projects
Memes	To be seen and shared with many people on the Internet
Campaign	Thoughts or opinions added by blog readers
App	A word, phrase or topic that is popular on Twitter at any given moment
News feed	A word or group of words that starts with  number sign (#) and is used to group together similar ideas and topics
Emoticon	A web page, or group of pages, that can be edited or changed by a group of people
Troll	Communicating in real-time through computers or smart phones by writing
Crowdfunding	A virtual space where all your saved files can be accessed from anywhere
