Matthew Thomas is English. He is 15 and his brother Paul is 13, but they don’t go to school. They are in Arica (the city in Chile) for a year because their parents are scientists there. They study at home. There aren’t any English-speaking schools in Arica and they don’t speak very good Spanish. And the boys’ parents think their sons can learn a lot at home.
Paul and Matthew study the usual subjects – Maths, English, History, Geography and so on. They use books or the Internet. And sometimes their parents teach them. The boys like studying at home.
They can choose how to do things. For example, Matthew can study Maths on Monday and Physics on Tuesday, or Biology on Monday and History on Tuesday.
