I. Read and translate the following text in the written form. A career in Business

Many office workers dream of working their way up to the top from messenger to president of the corporation. The way lies through middle management positions. Middle management includes junior executives, who may recommend action to management or see the company’s policies for their companies, especially those that involve finances. The top managers of the large corporations have a great deal of power and influence.

It is still possible to start out at the bottom and go all the way to the top. Because the financial operation of business is so important, some accountants become top executives. In companies where technology is important, people with engineering background can also rise to the top. Nowadays, however, education plays a central role in the selection of men and women for management jobs. Many US universities have courses in business administration. The graduates of these courses often start out in middle management jobs. From there they can easily be promoted if they show the necessary personality and ability.

II. Find the English equivalents:

III. Answer the following questions to the text.

IV. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian. Emphasize the infinitive, defining its shape.

1. There is no even a chance for him to be promoted.

2. He didn’t dare to argue with his boss.

3. Peter was sorry not to have been offered the job.

4. To control an economy is the same as to intervene in it.

5. The economics course to be offered to students is to bring together microeconomics and macroeconomics.

V. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian using infinitive constructions.

1. The Board of Directors seem to have been negotiating the proposal for more than an hour.

2. The person I spoke to didn’t appear to know anything about the company’ product.

3. Money is known to be accepted as a means of payment.

4. We watched the top manager enter the main office.

5. All product prices are expected to be raised due to the new taxes.

VI. Complete the dialogue using the sentences in the box.

A: I’m afraid he is in a meeting at the moment. Can I help ?

A: Certainly, I’ll give the message.

- No I need to talk to Mr Hopwood, I think. What time will he be out of the meeting?

- Hello, can I speak to Adrian Hopwood, please?

- Okay, I’ll do that.

- Actually, would you mind? Could you tell him that Jennifer McAndrews called and that I’m in the office all day if could call me back.
