The President / The Prime Minister of Belarus is the country’s head of state, the guarantor of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus, the rights and liberties of man and citizen. The current President of Belarus is Alexander Lukashenko.
The Belarusian President is directly elected by the people / indirectly elected by the people through the Electoral College for a 5-year / 4-year term of office. Any Belarusian citizen over the age of 18 / 21 can vote in the elections. Presidential candidates must be: a citizen of Belarus, over 35 / 45 years old, resident in Belarus for at least 10 / 20 years.
The President / The Prime Minister leads the executive branch of Belarusian government and is responsible for the sovereignty of the state, defence and national security, territorial integrity, political and economic stability. The official also fulfills a number of other functions including those of the Marshal / Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Belarus, and the Head of the Security Council.
The members of the Council of Ministers / the Republic, that is the Prime Minister, his deputies, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, Minister of Defence, Internal Affairs Minister are appointed or dismissed by the President. The same refers to the Chairman / Director and the members of the National Bank of Belarus. The President appoints ambassadors, grants citizenships and pardons.
