Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists

Workers in this rapidly growing field assist people in managing and overcoming mental and/or emotional problems and disorders that can interfere with their personal relationships. They may provide therapy to individuals or work with an entire family. In most cases, counselors and therapists must have a minimum of a master's degree in social work, psychology, counseling or marriage and family therapy to enter the field. State licensing is also required to practice. The anticipated growth rate in the field is 29%, which is much higher than the average 11% projected for all job fields through 2022. The median pay in the 2012 BLS survey was $41,500.

Substance Abuse and Behavior Disorder Counselors

Counselors in this field are tasked with helping people cope with and overcome addictions, such as alcoholism, drug abuse, eating disorders and other related issues. They are responsible for providing support and in some cases treatment. Entry into this field can vary greatly based on employer with some only asking for a high school diploma. Other positions may demand a minimum of a master's degree. Psychology, counseling, social work and other related degrees can be quite useful. In many cases, certifications are required, as well. This field is growing at a very brisk pace with the Department of Labor anticipating a growth rate of 31% through 2022. The median pay for workers in the 2012 BLS survey was $38,520.

Rehabilitation Counselors

Counselors in this unique field are tasked with helping people who have emotional or physical disabilities to live independently. They may assist them in managing social, personal and employment-related aspects of independent living, as well. This field typically calls for a master's in rehabilitation counseling or a related field. State certification may also be required. This field is growing at an anticipated 20% through 2022. The median pay in 2012 was $33,880.

Most social and community service occupations hold much promise in the years ahead. Students interested in entering these fields, however, are urged to conduct their own research. Job availability, hiring requirements and pay can vary greatly based on location and employer.

Task 18. Listen to two candidates doing the speaking tasks above and compare their performance to that of your classmates.

Assess your classmates in terms of:

  • grammar

  • vocabulary

  • discourse management

  • pronunciation

  • interactive communication

Task 19. Role-play. Read the first paragraph. Then work in groups of three to act out a dialogue between the teenager and her parents.

The teenager insists on becoming a singer, the parents are trying to make her change her mind. Record yourselves.
