Updating ecdis Software
ECDIS in operation comprises hardware, software and data.
If the ECDIS is not updated to the latest version of ISO standards then it will not comply with SOLAS chart carriage requirements as set out in SOLAS regulation V/19.2.1.4
It is important for the safety of navigation that the application software within the ECDIS works fully in accordance with the performance standards and is capable of displaying all the relevant digital information contained within the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC).
Any ECDIS which is not upgraded to be compatible with the latest version of the
S-52 presentation library may be unable to correctly display the latest charted features. Additionally, the appropriate alarms and indications may not be activated even though the features have been included in the ENC. Similarly any ECDIS which is not updated to be fully compliant with the latest version of the S-63 Data Protection Standard may fail to decrypt or to properly authenticate some ENCs, leading to failure to load or install.
ENC data protection scheme will include specification for an ENC update status report. This report can be completed and used to prove that the ECDIS is conforming to the latest updates.
Vessels with internet access can check the latest software upgrade for their particular ECDIS equipment since most manufacturers publish this information on line, for instance:
JRC - . http://jrc.am/ecdis-software
FURUNO - http://www.furuno.com/en/products/ecdis
The version of ECDIS software in use is to be detailed in form NAV13E.
If there is any doubt your vessel control group must be consulted.
Maintaining ecdis systems
To ensure reliability, periodic tests / checks and regular maintenance of both ECDIS systems must be carried out as follows:-
Updating shall be affected as required by paragraphs a) and b), (ENC and system software), to ensure the ECDIS is maintained to the latest applicable International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) standards.
Regular maintenance and servicing shall be run when the vessel is at a safe location in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, at a minimum of 3 monthly intervals where a schedule is not defined by the manufacturer. The procedure should ensure sensor input failure alarms and other warning alarms (audio and visual) are in good working order.
Tests shall also be conducted to ensure the emergency power supply is available automatically in case of main power loss. Alarms to indicate power disruption faults / failure shall be proven. UPS / Battery back-up systems shall be verified for satisfactory operation / on load duration on a monthly basis. Test routines / programmes and intervals shall be included in the PMP.
No other software shall be installed / used on the system and authorised anti-virus software shall be kept up-to-date. Data transfer devices must be dedicated for the purpose, virus scanned and not used for any other purpose.
