1.Read andf listen to chapters 5 and 6 (go to

2.Find the following expressions in the text and reproduce the situations in which they are used (make up your own sentences, do not just read sentences out from the text).

3.Read the following dictionary definitions of ‘accident’ and ‘incident’ and answer the question: Did the chandelier in the Opera House crash down by accident? For the audience in the Opera House was the whole happening an incident or an accident? And for the directors of the Opera House?

Incident
a single event or instance of something happening, often one that is not very important or that forms part of a larger event: She told us about some of the amusing incidents of her holiday. One particular incident sticks in my mind.

a serious or violent event, such as a crime, or an attack A youth was seriously injured in a shooting incident on Saturday night.
a disagreement between two countries, often involving military forces: the US regretted the incident
without incident - with nothing unpleasant or unusual happening: The demonstration passed off without incident.

5.Translate Russian into English using the information about ‘incident’ and ‘accident’ you got in the previous exercise.

6.Explain or comment on the following:

7.Read about a rhetorical question, comment on the examples and find examples of this stylistic device in the text.
A rhetorical question is a question asked merely for effect with no answer expected. The answer may be obvious or immediately provided by the questioner. A rhetorical question can be "an effective persuasive device, subtly influencing the kind of response one wants to get from anaudience" (Edward P.J. Corbett).
Examples of common rhetorical questions: "If your friend jumped off the bridge would you do it too?" “You don't think I'm that stupid, do you?" "Are you kidding?"
Examples of rhetoric questions from literature: "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" - From Shakespeare's Sonnet No.18.
8.Answer the questions.
When did Raoul and Christine meet for the first time?
Why didn’t Christine write to Raoul after they left Brittany?
Why did Christine write a letter to Raoul in Paris?
Was Raoul angry with Christine after he heard a man’s voice in her dressing room? How did he feel? Find some sentences in the text which help the reader identify his feelings.
How did Christine explain to Raoul why he had heard a man’s voice in her dressing room?
Was La Carlotta frightened when she received the threatening letter? Why? (Why not?) What kind of person may she be?

Give an account of the events described in Chapters 5 and 6.
Discuss the following.
How do you feel about Opera? Does it bore you? Excite you? What kind of people are opera singers? Are they different from other people? In what way? Find some adjectives which in your opinion could be used to describe the personality type of the “opera singer”.
Have you ever been inspired by someone or something? Discuss the power of inspiration.
