3 To increase the pre-load, turn the spring seat anti-clockwise; to decrease the pre-load, turn the spring seat clockwise (see illustration 11.2). Note: Always ensure both shock absorber spring pre-load adjusters are adjusted equally.

  1. Place the bike on its centre stand. Remove the silencer (see Chapter 4) and the rear wheel (see Chapter 7).

  2. Remove the chain tensioner assembly from each end of the swingarm (see illustration).

  3. On R and T models, detach the brake pedal return spring from the lug on the swingarm (see illustration 3.9). Although not essential for swingarm removal, remove the split pin and unscrew the nut and bolt that secure the brake torque arm to the swingarm, noting the position of the plain and spring washers (see illustration). Discard the split pin.

  4. On V, W, SW, X, SX, Y and SY models, unscrew the bolt securing the rear brake hose clamp to the swingarm and secure the brake caliper bracket to the frame with a cable tie to avoid placing a strain on the hose (remove the right-hand side frame side panel if necessary).

  5. Unscrew the nuts securing the chainguard to the swingarm and remove the shouldered

  1. Place a suitable container underneath the coolant reservoir and detach the radiator overflow hose (see Chapter 3, Sec­tion 3).

  2. Unscrew the shock absorber lower mounting bolts and pull the shocks free of the swingarm mounting brackets (see illustration 10.3a).

  3. Remove the caps from the swingarm pivot points (see illustration). Unscrew the nut on the right-hand end of the swingarm pivot bolt and withdraw the bolt while supporting the swingarm (see illustration).

  4. Lower the swingarm out of the frame in order to clear the coolant reservoir (see illustration). Ensure the left and right-hand

pivot bolt sleeves are retained inside the swingarm dust seals (see Section 13).

10 If necessary, unscrew the screw securing the drive chain slider to the swingarm, remove the shouldered washer and unclip the slider from the swingarm (see illustrations).

  1. If removed, install the drive chain slider (see illustrations 13.10a, b and c) and lubricate the bearings, dust seals, sleeves and the pivot bolt with grease.

  2. Offer up the swingarm, ensuring it is correctly positioned between the top and bottom runs of the drive chain and that none of the breather hoses are pinched behind the engine unit. Align the swingarm with the pivot bolt lugs and install the pivot bolt through the frame and swingarm from the left-hand side (see illustration). Install the pivot bolt nut and tighten to the torque setting specified at the

beginning of this Chapter. Check that the swingarm pivots freely without binding and refit the pivot caps.

  1. Engage the lower ends of the shock absorbers in the swingarm mounting brackets, install the mounting bolts and tighten to the specified torque setting.

  2. Connect the radiator overflow hose to the coolant reservoir and refill the reservoir (see Chapter 3).

  3. Position the chainguard over the chain and align the guard with its mounting brackets, noting the alignment tab and slot on the front mounting. Install the shouldered washes and tighten the nuts securely.

  4. Install the chain tensioners.

  5. On R and T models, if removed, install the brake torque arm between the two halves of the bracket on the swingarm. Fit the mounting bolt from the right-hand side and then the spring washer, plain washer and nut from the left-hand side of the bracket. Tighten the nut securely and fit a new split pin. Connect the brake pedal return spring to the lug on the swingarm and install the rear wheel.

  6. On V, W. SW, X, SX, Y and SY models, engage the lug on the brake caliper bracket with the socket on the swingarm and install the rear wheel. Install the bolt securing the rear brake hose clamp to the swingarm and tighten the bolt securely.

  7. Install the silencer (see Chapter 4).

  8. Check and adjust the drive chain slack (see Chapter 1). Check the operation of the rear suspension before taking the machine on the road.

13 Swingarm - inspection and bearing renewal

Inspection

  1. Remove the swingarm (see Section 12).

  2. Remove the left and right-hand pivot bolt sleeves from the swingarm dust seals; note that the left-hand sleeve is longer than the right-hand sleeve (see illustration). Lever out the seals from each side, taking care not to damage them.

  3. Thoroughly clean all components with solvent, removing all traces of dirt, corrosion and grease. Inspect all components closely, looking for obvious signs of wear such as heavy scoring, and cracks or distortion due to accident damage. Check that the two arms of the swingarm are aligned with each other. Any damaged or worn component must be renewed.

  4. If you doubt the straightness or alignment of the swingarm, lay the swingarm on the work surface and support it so that the pivot bolt tube is level (check this with a spirit level). Install the chain adjusters and the axle and check the level of the axle. If the axle is not level, the swingarm is out of true and must be renewed, although seek the advice of a frame specialist to confirm your findings.

  5. Check the swingarm pivot bolt for straightness by rolling it on a flat surface such as a piece of plate glass (first wipe off all old

grease and remove any corrosion using fine emery cloth). If the equipment is available, place the bolt in V-blocks and measure the runout using a dial gauge. If the bolt is bent or the runout excessive, renew it.

6 Clean the bearings with solvent and dry them with compressed air. Inspect the bearings (see Tools and Workshop Tips (Section 5) in the Reference section).

Bearing renewal

  1. Remove the pivot bolt sleeves and the dust seals (see Step 2). Remove the circlip from the right-hand end of the pivot bolt tube (see illustration).

  2. Refer to Tools and Workshop Tips (Section 5) in the Reference section before removing bearings. Drive out the caged ball bearing in the right-hand end of the pivot tube from the opposite end (see illustration). Remove the bearing spacer from inside the tube, noting which way round it fits. Drive out the needle roller bearing in the left-hand end of the pivot tube from the opposite end. Note: The needle bearing should be renewed as a matter of course if it is removed.

  3. Clean the caged ball bearing and inspect it for wear or damage. If the bearing does not run smoothly and freely or if there is excessive freeplay, il must be renewed.

10 Install the bearing spacer from the right- hand end of the pivot bolt tube. Install the caged ball bearing into the right-hand end of the pivot tube with the stamped side facing out, install the circlip and grease the bearing (see illustration).

  1. When installing the new needle bearing, lubricate it with molybdenum disulphide grease.

  2. Check the condition of the dust seals and renew them if they are damaged or deteriorated.

Removal

Note: The original equipment drive chain fitted to these models has a staked-type joining link which can be disassembled using either Honda service tool, Pt. No. 07HMH-MR10102, or one of several commercially-available drive chain cutting/staking tools. Such chains can be recognised by the joining link side plate's identification marks (and usually its different colour), as well as by the staked ends of the link's two pins which look as if they have been deeply centre-punched, instead of peened over as with all the other pins.

A Warning: NEVER install a drive chain which uses a clip-type split link. Use ONLY the correct service tools to secure the staked-type of joining link - if you do not have access to such tools, have the chain renewed by a Honda dealer to be sure of having it securely installed. 1 The chain can be removed by splitting it at the joining link as described in Steps 2 and 3

below or by removing the rear wheel and swingarm and detaching it from the front sprocket after the sprocket has been removed from the output shaft.

  1. Slacken the drive chain (see Chapter 1). Locate the joining link in a suitable position to work on by rotating the back wheel.

  2. Split the chain at the joining link using the chain breaker, carefully following the manufacturer's operating instructions (see also Section 8 in Tools and Workshop Tips in the Reference Section). Remove the chain from the bike, noting its routing around the swingarm.

Cleaning

4 Soak the chain in kerosene (paraffin) for approximately five minutes.

Caution: Don't use gasoline (petrol), solvent or other cleaning fluids which might damage its internal sealing properties. Don't use high-pressure water. Remove the chain, wipe it off, then blow dry it with compressed air immediately. The entire process shouldn't take longer than ten minutes - if it does, the O-rings in the chain rollers could be damaged.
