A little history

University Education in the United Kingdom originates in the XII century., When they were founded Oxford and Cambridge universities. Prior XIX in other universities was not in England. However, universities are based in Scotland - for example, in St. Andrews (1411g.), Glasgow (1451), Aberdeen (1495) and Edinburgh (1583).

The Industrial Revolution, swept Britain in the XIX century, put the country faced with the need to prepare experienced managers and administrators. In many industrial centers, new universities. The University of London was established in 1836, the University of Manchester -. In 1851, in Birmingham -. In 1900, in Liverpool -. In 1903, in Bristol -. In 1909, at Reading -. In 1926. These universities have become known as "red brick": built of brick, they are markedly different from the ancient stone walls of Oxford and Cambridge.

Age of technical and technological progress dictated his demands. After World War II the country was founded universities in Nottingham (1948). Kiel (1949.), Exeter (1922)., Sussex, Warwick, Kent and Essex (60s). Until recently, they were called "new" or "glass" - because of the modern buildings.

Academic degrees

Degrees in the UK awarded to students who have successfully completed training. Formally, the degree of the same rank, obtained in different universities do not differ from each other, but in practice their "weight" is defined reputation assign them to the University.

The system of academic degrees has absorbed many traditions. For example, the word "bachelor" (in English it is also a "bachelor") stems from the days when the university learned only boys. Presumably, they were not married, because to support a family while studying was hard.

Here are some of the first stage of academic degrees awarded by universities in England and Wales:

BA - Bachelor of Arts;

BEd - Bachelor of Education Sciences;

EEng - Bachelor of Engineering Sciences;

BSc - Bachelor of Natural Sciences;

LLB - Bachelor of Law;

BMus - Bachelor of Music;

BM - Bachelor of Medicine.

The titles of degrees in different universities in different times, there are exceptions to the rule. In some Scottish universities, the owner of the first degree in the humanities - Master (MA) instead of Bachelor (BA). At some universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, BA is assigned to the humanities and the natural sciences, but the qualification Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Cambridge there, and Oxford is the highest academic degree.

In order to acquire a bachelor's degree will have studied for three (England and Wales) or four (Scotland) years. However, there is a degree for which also needs practical experience, - training period increases accordingly. Future designers, for example, is required to pass a preparatory course, and then - a three-year basic. To obtain a degree in medicine, dental and architecture need to study up to 7 years.
