The Future Perfect Tense

Pattern I

a) She will have done the work by 6 o’clock tomorrow.

The structure denotes an action completed before a definite moment in the future.

Pattern II

b) By the end of June she will have worked there for 30 years.

It denotes an action which will begin before a definite moment in the future, will continue up to that moment and will be going on at that moment.

The Forms of the Future Perfect Tense:

affirmative:

Sub will have V3 .

(I/We shall have V3)

Helen will have read the book by 3 o’clock tomorrow.

negative:

Sub will not (won’t) have V3.

(I/We shall not (shan’t) have V3)

Helen will not (won’t) have read a book at 3 o’clock tomorrow.

interrogative

Will Sub have V3 ?

(Shall I/We have V3)

Will Helen have read the book by 3 o’clock tomorrow?

Yes, she will.

No, she will not. (No, she won’t)

Exercise 1. Say that you will do the same.

Model

T.: He will have read the book by the end of the week.

St.: I’ll have read the book by the end of the week, too. (also)

  1. Ann will have got up by six tomorrow.

  2. She will have done her morning exercises by 6.15.

  3. She will have washed by 6.30.

  4. Ann will have dressed by 6.35.

  5. She will have had breakfast by 7 o’clock.

  6. She will have put on her hat and coat by 7.15.

  7. Ann will have waited for the bus by 7.30.

  8. She will have come to the University by 7.45.

  9. She will have listened to the lectures by 2 o’clock.

  10. Ann will have had dinner before 3 o’clock.

Exercise 2. Disagree with the statements.

Exercise 6. Answer the questions in the Future Perfect Tense, using the given suggestions. Follow the model.

T.: Will you be asleep if I call on you at eight? (get up)

St.: Oh, no, I shall have got up by that time.

  1. Will your sister be having dinner if I call for her at 6? (have dinner)

  2. Will your brother be at home at nine o’clock on Sunday? (leave for the country)

  3. Will your mother be still cooking dinner at 4 in the afternoon? (finish cooking)

  4. Will the typist be still typing the papers on Monday morning? (do everything)

  5. Will Kevin still be a student next June? (graduate)

  6. Will you be doing the shopping when we get home? (return home)

Exercise 7. Complete the sentences by translating the second part into English

  10. The girl will have been ill for 5 years by next month.

  11. They will have studied at the university for three years by the end of June.

  12. They will have worked at the plant for several years by the end of this year.

Exercise 10. Ask special questions according to the model:
