Future Tenses The Future Indefinite Tense

Pattern I

a) I (you) shall (will) go to the University tomorrow.

We use the Future Simple Tense to denote actions of facts in the future.

Markers: tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, next year, in a week (month, year)

Pattern II.

b) I shall (will) go there if (when) you come.

Mind! The Future Simple Tense is not used in adverbial clauses of time and condition.

The clauses usually begin with the following conjunctions:

  1. The clauses of condition begin with:

if, in case, on condition that

  1. The clauses of time begin with:

when, till, until, as soon as, after, while, unless

The Forms of the Future Indefinite Tense:

affirmative:

Sub will V1.

(I/We shall V1)

Helen will go to school next year.

negative:

Sub will not (won’t) V1.

(I/We shall not (shan’t) V1)

Helen will not (won’t) go to school next year.

interrogative

Will Sub V1 ?

(Shall I/We V1?)

Will Helen go to school next year?

Yes, she will.

No, she will not. (No, she won’t)

Exercise 1. Say that the same will take place tomorrow, on Sunday, next week, etc.

Model

T.: Tom comes home at 8 o’clock every day.

St.: Tom will come home at 8 o’clock tomorrow.

  1. Tom gets up at 8 o’clock.

  2. He does his morning exercises at 8.05.

  3. Tom washes up at 8.10.

  4. He dresses at 8.15.

  5. After that he has breakfast.

  6. He is ready to go to his classes at 8.30.

  7. Tom catches a bus at 8.38.

  8. He comes to the University at 8.55.

  9. Tom listens to the lectures from 9 to 2 o’clock.

  10. He has dinner at 3 o’clock.

Exercise 2. Disagree with the following according to the model:

Model

T.: Tom will get up at 7 o’clock.

St.: No, he won’t. Tom will not get up at 7 o’clock.

Use the sentences from Ex. 1.

Exercise 3. Make the following sentences interrogative using the model.

a) Model I

T.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock.

St.: Will Tom get up at 8 o’clock?

Use the sentences from Ex. 1.

b) Model II

T.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock.

St.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock, won’t he?

Use the sentences from Ex. 1.

Exercise 4. Ask special questions according to the model.

a) Model I

T.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock.

St.: Who will get up at 8 o’clock?

b) Model II

T.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock.

St.: What will Tom do at 8 o’clock?

c) Model III

T.: Tom will get up at 8 o’clock.

St.: When (at what time) will Tom get up?

Use the sentences from Ex. 1.

Exercise 5. Respond to the statements according to the model. Use the given suggestions.

Model 1

T.: I can’t do this work myself. (help you)

St.: Shall I help you?

  1. We want to listen to the news. (switch on the radio)

  2. I want to go to the cinema today. (buy the tickets)

  3. I don’t know where the library is. (take you there)

  4. I have no pen. (give you mine)

  5. It is dark in the room. (switch on the light)

  6. I haven’t got a dictionary. (bring my dictionary)

  7. I have no time to post my letter today. (do it)

  8. I don’t understand this rule. (explain it to you)

  9. I know you have a new TV-set. (show it to you)

  10. Pete doesn’t know the words. (tell him)

Model II

T.: I am tired. (go home)

St.: Shall we go home?

  1. I don’t remember the way to the station. (walk there together)

  2. I like music. (listen to my new records)

  3. I’m afraid we’ll be late. (take a taxi)

  4. He is late, as usual. (wait for him a minute or two)

  5. I am sure she is hungry. (take sandwiches for her)

  6. It is rather stuffy in the room. (open the window)

  7. We know the rules badly. (go through them again)

  8. He arrives at 7 in the evening. (meet him)

  9. I am very tired. (have a rest)

  10. They are not ready. (wait for them)

Exercise 6. Complete the sentences using the given suggestions.

T.: I’ll phone you as soon as… (to arrive)

St.: I’ll phone you as soon as I arrive.

Exercise 7. Join the following sentences using the suggested conjunctions.

Model I (use the conjunction as soon as)

T.: He will send them a telegram. He’ll arrive in London.

St.: He will send them a telegram as soon as he arrives in London.

  1. We’ll join you. We’ll be ready.

  2. She will speak to Dr. Sandford. He will be free.

  3. He will phone you. He will get back.

  4. He will leave for home. We’ll have holidays.

  5. She will return you the book. She will read it.

  6. They will speak to you. They see you.

  7. He will have dinner. He will come home.

  8. She will cook breakfast. She will get up.

  9. They will go to the river. They will come to the village.

  10. We will meet you. We will receive your note.

Model II (use the conjunction when)

T.: He will come to you. You will invite him.

St.: He will come to you when you invite him

  1. He will give you the book. He will come back.

  2. She will help you. She will come home.

  3. We’ll meet you at the station. You will send us a telegram.

  4. They will go to the shop. They will have time.

  5. She will go to the pictures. He will invite her.

  6. He will go home. Our classes will be over.

  7. He will show you the letter. You will come home.

  8. The teacher will return our dictations. She will mark them.

  9. They will go for a walk. The weather will be good.

  10. I will phone him. My sister will finish her talk.

Model III (use the conjunction after)

T.: They will open the meeting. Everybody will come.

St.: They will open the meeting after everybody comes.

  1. You will understand the rule. The teacher will explain it.

  2. He will have dinner. He will come home.

  3. They will go for a walk. It will stop raining.

  4. She will have breakfast. She will get up.

  5. I’ll give you this book. I’ll read it.

  6. She will try the dress on. She will buy it.

  7. They will visit you. They will finish the work.

  8. Jack will do his homework. He will have dinner.

  9. Ann will buy a new pen. She will break her old one.

  10. We will visit our friends. They will return from their trip.

Model IV (use the conjunction before)

T.: Pete will tell us the news. He will leave for Kiev.

St.: Pete will tell us the news before he leaves for Kiev.

Use the sentences of Model III.

Model V (use the conjunction while)

T.: She will look after the children. We will be away.

St.: She will look after the children while we are away.

  1. She will stay with her sister. We’ll be at the theatre.

  2. He will wait for you in the street. You will do the shopping.

  3. They will stay at our house. They will be in N. Novgorod.

  4. Nick and his friend will play a game of chess. You will watch TV.

  5. He will mend your shoes. You will wait.

  6. Ann’s mother will cook supper. Ann will do her homework.

  7. Their father will read a newspaper. Their mother will cook dinner.

  8. Mrs. Brown will speak with her friend. Mr. Brown will read a book.

  9. Mary will clean the flat. Her sister will wash the linen.

  10. The boys will play football. The girls will watch an interesting film.

  11. They will wait for the children. They will have dinner.

  12. The teacher will look through the notebooks. The pupils will write a test.

Model VI (use the conjunction till or until)

T.: I will stay in Kiev. I will finish my business there.

St.: I will stay in Kiev till I finish my business there.

  1. You will not leave. They will be there.

  2. I shall keep his books. He will need them.

  3. They will wait. He will come.

  4. She will look after him. He will be well again.

  5. Nick will not cross the road. The light will change to green.

  6. Helen will not attend her classes. She will be better.

  7. John will not come home. He will repair his car.

  8. Jane will stay at her sister’s house. Her sister will return home.

  9. The people will wait for the train. It will arrive.

  10. They will listen to the concert. It will end.

  11. The boy will learn French. He will know it well.

  12. Fred will work at this office. He will find another job.

Model VII (use the conjunction unless)

T.: Ted will not give you this book. He will be through with it.

St.: Ted will not (won’t) give you this book unless he is through with it.

  1. He will not write. He will need something.

  2. She will phone us. She will forget to do it.

  3. We shan’t be able to go. We’ll book the seats.

  4. He will not catch the train. He will hurry.

  5. The students will never know the language well. They will study hard.

  6. Jack will not get well. He will follow the doctor’s instructions.

  7. They will not stay in the country. It will get warmer.

  8. They won’t know the rules well. They will read them carefully again.

  9. He will not borrow the books from the library. He will return the old ones.

  10. The baby will not stop crying. It will get its milk.

  11. The Browns will not invite you to their house-warming party. They will refurnish their flat.

  12. His brother’s car won’t go properly. He will repair it.

Exercise 8. Answer the questions using the subordinate clauses of time and condition.

Model

T.: Will you go to the party?

St.: Yes, I’ll go to the party if / when / as soon as I do my homework..

  1. When will you come to her place?

  2. After what will you play the piano?

  3. Till what time will you read the book?

  4. Will you speak with an English tourist?

  5. Will you help your little sister (brother)?

Exercise 9. Ask and answer all types of questions using the following situations. Work in pairs using general, disjunctive, special and alternative questions.

  1. 1. Tom will go to school tomorrow.

2. Ann will go to the park in the evening.

  1. 1. Polly will come home in an hour.

2. Polly’s mother will have dinner when she comes home.

  1. 1. Jack will phone home as soon as he arrives in London.

2. Jack’s friend will go to London next week.

  1. 1. The children won’t go for a walk if the weather is rainy.

2. The boys will play football if the weather is sunny tomorrow.

  1. 1. Ann’s mother will go shopping on Saturday.

2. Ann will help her mother about the house unless she is busy.

2. Her friend will go for a walk after dinner.

Exercise 10. Make up your own situations on the analogy with the above ones and work in pairs asking all types of questions.

Exercise 11. Make up your own situations on the analogy.

Exercise 12. Make up dialogues using the following key-words.

  1. to have spare time, to invite, to see the film, to be on, as soon as, if, to be busy, at the disposal.

  2. to be good at skating, to take part in the competition, unless, to train hard, to win the first prize.

  3. to go for a walk, the weather, to be fine, when, if, to do homework, to have a good time.

  4. to go to a football match, to be fond of, to buy the tickets, (not) to be late, to invite.

  5. to watch TV, as soon as, unless, to come home, from work, the parents, to do homework.

  6. to miss classes, to be late for, reasonable excuse, if, to get on one’s nerves.

Exercise 13. Translate into English.
