    Russia

    1. The vast territory of Russia lies in the Eastern part of Europe and in the Northern part of Asia. In area, it is one of the largest countries of the world. Airlines service many cities throughout the country. A flight from Moscow to Magadan takes eight hours. Russia is washed by twelve seas and three oceans. The oceans are the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic. The northern and eastern coasts of Russia are washed by the White Sea, the Barents Sea and by the Okhotsk Sea.

    2. The land of Russia varies a lot from heavy forests to barren deserts, from high peaked mountains to deep valleys. The Urals, the longest mountain chain in Russia, separates Europe from Asia. Russia is a land of long rivers and lakes. The broad Volga River system is of great historic, economic and cultural importance to Russia. It became the cradle of such ancient towns as Vladimir, Tver, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan.

    3. The Volga runs into the Caspian Sea, which is in reality the largest lake in the world. The Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. Russia borders on fourteen countries including the former Republics of the USSR which are now independent states. The history of Russia dates back to the year 862, when Ruric the chief of the Varangian tribe of the Ruses founded the state of Novgorod. Later the lands from Novgorod to the Black Sea and from the Carpathians to the Volga were called Rus.

    4. Now Russia is a Presidential Republic. The Russian Federative Republic is set up by the Constitution of 1993. Today the state symbol of Russia is a three colored banner. It has three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. The white stripe symbolizes the earth, the blue one stands for the sky, and the red one symbolizes liberty. It was the first symbol that replaced the former symbols in 1991. A new national emblem is a two headed eagle. It is the most ancient symbol of Russia. It originates from the heraldic emblem of the Ruricovitchies. All these symbols are official. They have been approved by the Federal Assembly.

    1. London is the capital of the United Kingdom, its economic, political and cultural

    center. It is one of the world's most important parts and one of the largest cities in the world. London with its suburbs has a population of about 11 million people.

    2. London has been a capital for nearly a thousand years. Many of its ancient buildings still stand. The most famous of there are the Tower of London, where crown jewels are kept, Westminster abbey and St. Paul's Cathedral. Most visitors also want to see the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Queen's Home with its Changing of the guards and many magnificent museums.

    3. Once London was a small Roman town on the north bank of the Thames. Slowly it grew into one of the world's major cities.

    4. Different areas of London seem like different cities. The West End is a rich man's world of shops, offices and theatres. The city of London is the district where most offices and banks are concentrated; the Royal Exchange and the Bank of England are here, too. The East End is the district where mostly working people live. The old port area is now called "Docklands". There are now new office buildings in Docklands, and thousands of new flats and houses.

    5. By the day the whole of London is busy. At night, off ices are quiet and empty, but the West End stays live, because this is where Londoners come to enjoy themselves. There are opera houses here, several concert halls and many theatres, as well as cinemas, in nearby Soho the pubs, restaurants and night clubs are busy half night.

    6. Like all big cities, London has streets and concert buildings, but it also has many big parks, full of trees, flowers and grass. In the middle of Hyde Park or Kensington Gardens you will think that you are in the country, miles away.

    7. Many people live outside the center of London in the suburbs and they travel to work in shops and offices by train, bus or underground.

    America in the Past and Today

    Many hundred years ago on the territory of the present day America the red-skin Indians lived. They hunted animals and fished, grew corn and tobacco.

    In the middle of the 15th century Christopher Columbus from Spain sailed with his crew on 33 small ships. They thought it was India. But Columbus was mistaken. It was an island near North America. This discovery took place on the 12th of October 1492. But this new land got its name “America” a little later when an Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci described it in his writings in 1499.

    In 1620 more than one hundred Englishmen left their country forever and went to America on board the ship “Mayflower” to live and work there.

    Later on, more and more people from many countries came to live in America. England considered these new territories as its colonies and soon the newcomers began to fight for their independence. The biggest war lasted from 1775 up to 1783. Commander-in-Chief of the North American Army was George Washington. His troops won this War for Independence and on July 4, 1776 the famous Declaration of Independence was signed by 13 United States of America. George Washington was elected to be the first American President.

    At present the USA is a highly developed industrial and agricultural country. The population of the USA is about 250 million people of many nationalities. Some of the biggest cities are New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco and others.

    The capital of the country is Washington. The American parliament (called Congress) has two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate.

    The flag of the USA has 13 red and white stripes representing the original 13 states and 50 stars – for each of the 50 states of the country. Each state has its national motto, bird and flower as its symbol.

    Arthur Conan Doyle (I859-1930)

    1. Arthur Conan Doyle was born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. His father, Charles E. Doyle was an artist and architect by profession, but he worked as a clerk in his office. The father died young and the Doyle family was very poor.

    2. Arthur's mother was a very good story-teller, and her fantastic stories he remembered all his life. The talent of story-telling Arthur inherited from his mother and it helped him as a writer. During his school years he read much, and he often told his school friends long and interesting stories, getting cakes and sweets.

    3. After finishing school Conan Doyle became a student of the medical faculty at the University of Edinburgh. In his third year of studies he went as a ship's doctor to the Arctic and after graduating from the University, he again went in a ship to Western Africa.

    4. He began his medical practice in a small English town South sea, where he spent eight years. Here in 1887, he published his first detective story "A Study in Scarlet" ("Этюд в багровых тонах"). Its main characters were Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and they became the most popular characters of a great many of Conan Doyle's stories.

    5. "A scandal in Bohemia", opened a collection of detective stories under the title "The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes". The story was published in 1891 and soon after that Baker Street became well-known address of Sherlock Holmes.

    6. All his life Conan Doyle liked sports: he skied, played golf and went in for boxing. He died in 1930. After his death, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, together with his friend Dr. Watson continued to be among the favorite characters of English literature and tourists coming to London always go to visit Baker Street to see the house where Sherlock Holmes lived.
