Compare: Porters carry luggage. Носильщики подносят багаж.

Luggage is carried by porters. Багаж подносится носильщиками.

If you want to mention the doer of the action, use the preposition by.

to lose – lost (неправильный)

Study the following examples in Russian and in English:

17. Word building. Prefixes.

English prefixes are not very numerous. You can find prefixes –over (too much) and – under (not enough) in some English verbs, verbals and nouns.

e. g. estimate – overestimate

sell – undersell

The most popular negative prefixes are: – dis, – un, – il, –im, – ir, –in. Although in most cases you just have to remember, which prefix is appropriate, the following guidelines may be of some help.

If a root begins with the letter r (as in reversible), prefix – ir should be used (irreversible).

If a root begins with the letter l (as in legal), prefix – il should be used (illegal).

If a root begins with the letter m (as in mortal) or letter p (as in possible), prefix – im should be used (immortal, impossible).
