Turbocharger Generator Boosts Efficiency
Shop trials on the Man - B&W 6L70 MCE engine have been used to demonstrate the benefits of higher turbocharger efficiency.
With a standard turbocharger fitted to the 6L70 MCE, an efficiency of 65% was reached. The engine’s turbocharger was then equipped with a different compressor and a turbine rotor, and the turbocharger efficiency of over 68% was achieved.
At such efficiency levels, more exhaust gas energy is delivered than needed to compress air for optimal combustion in the engine. That leaves exhaust gas energy available for such purposes as producing electricity for the ship’s network or for transmission to the main engine shaft. In the 6L70 MCE trials, a new turbocharger generator unit developed by Siemens and MAN - B&W Diesel was successfully tested.
In this unit, an electric motor/generator arranged in the turbocharger silencer is steady coupled to the turbocharger rotor shaft.
Instead of the auxiliary blowers, the electric motor is used for starting and part load operations. Above 60 % power, it operates as a generator and delivers energy to the main engine shaft or electrical current to the ship’s network.
With this system, fuel savings of up to 4 g/kWh are possible.
