Abstract. This article focuses on road interchanges with continuous movement on both roads. We consider six types of the interchange schemes.

INTERSECTION AND INTERCHANGE DESIGNS

In the field of road transport, an interchange is «a road junction that typically uses grade separation, and one or more ramps, to permit traffic on at least one highway to pass through the junction without directly crossing any other traffic stream. It differs from a standard intersection, at which roads cross at grade. Interchanges are almost always used when at least one of the roads is a controlled-access highway (freeway or motorway) or a limited-access divided highway (expressway), though they may occasionally be used at junctions between two surface streets» [3].

Traffic Interchange project by volume of traffic 1000 – 4000 vehicles per day.

There are three types of specific points:

1) Confluence of the traffic streams.

2) Traffic streams segregation.

3) Intersection of the traffic streams.

Purposes of designing of the interchange:

1) Increase the road capacity.

2) Improve the safety movement of vehicles.

3) Ensure the smooth organization of movement.

4) Ensure the staging construction.

Traffic Interchange schemes:

  1. Full cloverleaf

  2. Ring with two overpasses

  3. Ring with five overpasses

  4. Tube

  5. Leaf – like type

  6. Pear – shaped type

In built-up areas the value of land to accommodate the intersection increases significantly. It is therefore necessary to consider the most compact versions of the intersection of transport corridors within the city.

A separate and very important issue is scheduled place of installation direction indicators at the stage of selecting a scheme.

Convenient placement of signs affects the size of interchange ramps. And, consequently, the size and number of crossing bars at the intersection.
