VIII. Complete the sentences using the Present or Past Participle. Translate them into Russian.

  1. The (steal) car was found in the woods.

  2. The tiger was a (terrify) sight for the villagers.

  3. The (terrify) villagers ran for their lives.

  4. The thief tried to open the (lock) door.

  5. A (grow) child needs a (balance) diet.

  6. Any (think) person knows that smoking is a destructive habit.

  7. Because we have a (write) agreement, the landlord won’t be able to raise our rent for two years.

  8. Name some places (visit) by you last year.

  9. His hat (blow) off by the wind was lying in the middle of the street.

  10. She was reading the book (buy) the day before.

IX. Use Participle I or Participle II.

The man … at the window is my uncle John (standing, stood). He’s rather unusual person. He’s got five pets … in his house (living, lived). One of these pets … Greeny is a young crocodile (calling, called). It lives in the bathroom … nobody but his master to come in (allowing, allowed). The other pet is a parrot … to speak (teaching, taught). He says rather strange things sometimes. The other two pets are bulldogs … at everybody … to the door of the flat (barking, barked) (coming, come). It’s not surprising that uncle John lives alone … by his wife two years ago when his fifth pet – a large snake … to him by a famous traveller appeared in his flat (leaving, left) (presenting, presented).

X. Translate the following sentences into Russian paying attention to Absolute Participle Construction.

  1. The weather being fine, we went for a walk.

  2. The work done, they went home.

  3. The play being boring, the audience left the house.

  4. We investigated the case, with the data being collected.

  5. You can set your mind at ease, all being well.

  6. The hour being late, she hastened home.

  7. The bridge having been swept away by the flood, the train was late.

  8. He knocked weakly at the door and, all his strength failing him, fell near the door.

  9. Their search revealing nothing, they walked to a coroner.

  10. The treaty having been signed, trade was at once resumed.

XI. Translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the Absolute Participle Construction.

  1. That being understand, the conference was over.

  2. There being no other matters to discuss, the old man said that he was going to bed.

  3. “But it’s so ridiculous that we don’t know what to do,” William told them, his voice rising in indignation.

  4. He threw himself on top of me, his fist hitting my face.

  5. The man was leaning forward in his seat, with his head resting in his hands.

  6. Death being contrary to their principles, the Forsytes took precautions against it.

  7. All hopes of his return having been abandoned, two or three of the share-holders went and drank some of the cold tea.

  8. She now saw them infrequently, her life being centered in the girl’s school where she taught.

  9. Well, you got nothing to worry about with Peg taking care of you.

  10. There were two serious accidents in the West Country, one involving a coach and a car.

  11. Two days later, Davidson walked, head bent, across the floor of my office.

  12. The choice made, she ran up to him.
