IV. Translate the following sentences into Russian. State the form and the function of the Participle.

  1. Everybody looked at the dancing girl.

  2. The man playing the violin is my friend.

  3. Entering the room she turned on the light.

  4. Looking out of the window he noticed a woman watering the flowers.

  5. Having read the notice she entered the room.

  6. Writing the dictation he made only one mistake.

  7. She came into the room leaving the door open.

  8. A word spoken in time may have very important results.

  9. A letter sent from St. Petersburg today will be in Moscow tomorrow.

  10. While speaking to Nick some days ago I forgot to ask him about his sister.

  11. The first rays of the rising sun lit up the top of the hill.

  12. While crossing the street one should first look to the left and then to the right.

  13. Having been translated before the text didn’t seem difficult for the students.

  14. Having descended the mountain they heard a man calling for help.

  15. Having been shown the wrong direction the travellers soon lost their way.

V. Exercise the Participle, translate the sentences into Russian.

  1. The fine paid amounted to three hundred dollars.

  2. The executor is a person appointed to “execute” the will, that is to give effect to the wishes expressed in the will by the testator.

  3. All criminal trials in Britain are held before a judge and a jury consisting of twelve ordinary people.

  4. The police investigating the case are looking for three men.

  5. The police never found the money stolen in the robbery.

  6. They promised to compensate for all expenses incurred.

  7. The document corrected cannot be accepted.

VI. 1. Translate the word combinations with Participle II.

2. Compose a number of sentences using the word combinations.

VII. Translate the following sentences into Russian paying attention to Participle II.

  1. There was no evidence left.

  2. Shocked by the poverty of my own vocabulary. I went to the British Museum.

  3. Life was too pleasant to allow me to give an undivided attention to literature.

  4. They sat on a fallen tree that made a convenient seat.

  5. The policeman watched us with dulled curiosity.

  6. I made my way toward the parked car.

  7. I looked up at the ceiling, painted by some 18th century Venetian now forgotten.

  8. Asked when they could expect an answer, he said it would take them about a week.

  9. I rode about the countryside on a horse lent me by a friend.

  10. Among the other witnesses expected to be called are the five surviving women.
