Who are the British?

John Robson

I’m an athlete and I’ve been chosen to represent my country on several occasions in athletics competitions abroad. I suppose I’m a bit unusual because my father’s Scottish, from Aberdeen, and my mum’s parents were from Nigeria. She came to Scotland when she was 8 years old. I consider myself British, although I suppose I support Scotland when they play football against England. Britishness is a national identity which includes the Scots, the Irish, the Welsh, the English and anyone else who has come here to make a new life. I know a lot of athletes who represent Britain whose parents or grandparents came from other countries, and they are just as proud to win a medal for Britain as anyone else. Don’t underestimate their sense of national pride!
