In 1970 the famous Norwegian traveller Thor Heyerdahl made a historic voyage. With the seven-man crew he sailed from the coast of North Africa to America in the papyrus boat Ra II . The crew included representatives of seven nations; diver and cameraman Georges Sourial from Egypt , expedition doctor Yuri Senkevich from the USSR , navigator Norman Baker from the USA, cook and cameraman Carlo Mauri from Italy, anthropologist Santiago Genoves from Mexico, papyrus boat expert Madani Othman from Morocco and photographer Kei Ohara from Japan. This is how Thor Heyerdahl describes the end of the journey. “ Before dawn on the 57th day at sea we spot four airplanes and about 50 small boats, out from Bridgetown, Barbados , to welcome us , eight men from eight nations on board Ra II . We blow our horn and shout madly for joy. Norman salutes our escorts by dipping our United Nations flag. Georges lights a signal flare. Carlo and Santiago wave from the mast . Kei and Yuri are everywhere with cameras . Madani is at the steering oars, smiling happily. I sit filled with happiness.

With sail down , we are being towed into the harbour of Bridgetown. Stepping ashore , we met our families, the press, the Prime Minister of Barbados, and some 25,000 of his countrymen.

The voyage has succeeded . But what has it proved? First, we have demonstrated that a papyrus ship, properly built, can cross an ocean . Second , we have shown that a boat of such ancient design- coming from North Africa, a cradle of the civilization- could cross the Atlantic with a crew to bring cultural influences to the native population of the Western Hemisphere.”
