Compulsory education in England finishes at 16. For all people as they approach this age the big question is – what are they going to do? How are they going to find a job? What kind of future training will they need? Some of them had already decided what to do by the age of 13 or 14 when they made their first choice of the options.

Most young people have several choices open to then when they leave school:

    1. Children may choose to leave school and get some job where they may be given further training on the job;

    2. They may go to an educational establishment and be trained in some type of vocational job learning at a full-time College of Further Education. At their course they will get their diploma and be able to start working.

    3. Those who want to get places at higher educational institutions such as Polytechnics, Universities or Colleges of Education can stay at school for 2 more years or go to the 6th-form College and get their GCEA - level at the age of 18.

Colleges of Further Education cab be full-time and part-time. They can offer degree courses and non - degree courses. Attendance is not compulsory and there is a great variety of choices appropriate to various needs. Students may enter at any age beginning with 16. There are day- time courses for students who can get a day release from their work. There are also part-time courses for home wives, old-age pensioners and others free to attend.

A large variety of vocational, cultural and practical courses are held in the evenings. Such colleges are open there from 8.30 a.m. till 10p.m. Millions of people attend these institutions and it justifies for the great desire of the young and the old to study.
