a) Design your own passenger car for overnight service. Make design drawings and present them with explanations in the auditorium. You can work in groups.

b) Find in the Internet (or using the other sources) some interesting information about new sleeping cars and innovations used in their construction.

Text 4: THE “LIREX” CONCEPT

The name LIREX (Light, Innovative Regional Express) represents an extraordinary train, and not only because of the numerous technical innovations which thrill experts, yet remain unrevealed to the common traveller. The LIREX concept represents a synthesis of technology and design – in terms of interior as well as the exterior. It is a synthesis which brings direct benefits to the paying traveller on particular.

Interior Perspectives

The pleasing impression for the traveller commences from the moment they enter the train, with ease, through the broad doors. The entry is level with plat­forms with a height of 760mm. In the case of lowered platforms, extended ramps are used. The entire train has low floor levels without any steps, which elimi­nates all barriers for wheel chairs and perambulators.

The interior complies with the ultimate in comfort standards for local transportation.

The train's unconventional floor plan and the harmonic composition of light­ing, furniture colour and materials, create a sense of well-being, convey­ing lightness and transparency, youth and modernity:

• The special light-architecture, with direct and indirect lighting, leads to various light zones with differ­ent luminous effects and moods.

• Colour tones, the composition of which generates an interplay of mutual increase and completion, convey a rhythmic impression throughout the entire train.

• Innovative effects were achieved by the use and combination of unusu­al materials.

Information and communication

The range of electronic equipment, used for infor­mation and communication purposes, normally applied in railway systems, has been significantly exceeded, particularly for suburban traffic.

• Bored and stressed passengers will find numer­ous ways to relax and entertain themselves by either listening to their favourite personal music on audio-modules installed at each row seat, or by watching video programs shown on screens incorporated into the seating. In addition to these offers, the passengers also have the opportunity to achieve virtual victories in video games, installed at operation desks located in the connecting pas­sages between wagons.

Should a passenger need reassurance that they have boarded the right train, there are displays mounted in the connecting passages - in addition to loud-speakers which announce all stops. For those less organised personalities, passengers can obtain time-table information via a monitor with a touch-screen and, of course, can obtain a print­out if needing to plan the trip on the train.

• Surveillance cameras at the rear of the wagons and emergency call facilities at the entries grant the passengers a safe and relaxing train ride, even late at night after a party or a theatre visit.

• Ticket-centres on board eliminate queuing at crowded ticket-counters.
