St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. The best architects from Western Europe were invited to construct palaces, cathedrals, churches and other buildings. Today the Winter Palace, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, St Isaac’s Cathedral, the Peter-and-Paul Fortress, the Admiralty building attract thousands of tourists from every corner of the world.

St Petersburg has a rich and interesting history. In 1914 its name was changed to Petrograd. In 1917 it became the capital. During the Great Patriotic War the city suffered very much. Many people died of starvation. Some parts of the city were destroyed by shelling.

Now St Petersburg is an important industrial, cultural and educational center. The population of the city is over 5 million people. Petersburg’s museums contain some of the world’s most famous art collections. The Hermitage, for example, contains the richest collection of pictures in the world.

The city is called the Northern Venice because there are many rivers and canals decorated with beautiful bridges. St Petersburg is also famous for its white nights.

The United Kingdom is situated in the north-west coast of Europe. The U.K. includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain, the largest island in Europe, contains England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom has an area of 240,000 square kilometers. The capital of the country is London. English is the official language. The population of the U.K. is nearly 60 million people. The British nation consists of the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish.

In the north-west and west the country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea, in the east – by the North Sea. The island of Great Britain is separated from France by the English Channel.

The climate of Great Britain is mild. It is not hot in summer or too cold in winter. It often rains in England. Snow falls only in the north and west of the country. There are no very long rivers in Great Britain. The Thames is the deepest river and the Severn is the longest one. The rivers seldom freeze in winter.

Great Britain is a parliamentary monarchy. Officially the head of state is the Queen, but her power is not absolute. The Queen acts only on the advice of the ministers and Parliament. There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the Labour, the Conservative and the Liberal parties.
