Предисловие

Отличительной чертой современной эпохи является ускоряющийся с каждым годом темп развития новых технологий, что обязывает каждого специалиста овладевать иностранным языком.

Грамматические и лексические навыки и умения представляют собой центр языковой компетенции, на который опираются речевые навыки и умения. Невозможно установить приоритет грамматики над лексикой, так же как и лексики над грамматикой. Без знания грамматической структуры языка невозможно решать коммуникативные задачи на иностранном языке. Однако усвоение грамматической системы языка происходит только на основе знакомой лексики.

Основной целью учебного пособия является развитие лексико-грамматических умений и навыков. В данном учебном пособии представлены разные виды упражнений по английскому языку. Выполнение упражнений позволяет закрепить на практике грамматические правила и проверить уровень их усвоения студентами. Ряд упражнений позволяет также развить умения и навыки чтения и перевода общенаучных текстов, а также образцов деловой корреспонденции. Учебное пособие дополнено справочным материалом по грамматике английского языка.

Данное учебное пособие предназначено для студентов очного и заочного отделений Института строительства, транспорта и машиностроения, Института нефти и газа.

Вариант № 1

Задание № 1. Прочтите текст и письменно переведите на русский язык:

CAMBRIDGE

1. Cambridge is one of the best-known towns in the world, and can be found on most tourists’ lists of places to visit. The principal reason for its fame is its University, which started during the 13^th century and grew steadily, until today there are more than twenty colleges.

2. Most of them allow visitors to enter the grounds and courtyards. The most popular place from which to view them is from the backs, where the college grounds go down to the River Cam.

3. The oldest college is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1248, and the most recent is Robinson College, which was opened in 1977. The most famous is probably King’s, because of it magnificent chapel. Its choir of boys and undergraduates is also very well known.

4. The University was exclusively for men until 1871 when the first women’s college was opened. Another was opened two years later and a third in 1954. In the 1970s, most colleges opened their doors to both men and women. Almost all the colleges are now mixed, but it will be many years before there are equal numbers of both sexes. Every year, thousands of students come to Cambridge from overseas to study English.

5. To the North of this ancient city is the modern face of the University - the Cambridge Science Park, which has developed in response to the need for universities to increase their contact with high technology industry. It was established in 1970 by Trinity College, which has a long scientific tradition going back to Sir Isaac Newton. It is now home to more than sixty companies and research institutes.

6. The ideas of “science” and “parks” may not seem to go together naturally, but the whole area is in fact very attractively designed, with a lot of space between each building. The planners thought that it was important for people to have a pleasant, park-like environment in which to work.
