EASTER.

Easter is a religious holiday. It comes on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25. Just before Easter, the school and colleges close. The students have a week or ten days of Spring vacation.

Easter is a church holiday, and many churches gave an out door service at sunrise on this day. Easter marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. At Easter people usually buy new clothes to wear on Easter Sunday.

After church services, many people take walks down the streets wearing their new Easter hats and suits. The see their friends on the street. This colourful procession of people is called the “Easter Parade”. The Easter Parade tradition started about 100 years ago.

Ladies and gentlemen in spring finary usually walked up Broadway toward Canal Street, or down to the Battery after church, and took the new sun with their neighbours until it was time for the noonday meal.

Another custom observed at Easter time is the decoration of eggs and preparing basket of eggs and candy eggs for children. Very often eggs are hidden in the yards and the children have an egg-hunt trying to find them. Usually little candies and a large chocolate egg are hidden along with the real eggs. Little children believe the Easter rabbit comes and leaves the eggs for them.

That is why Easter candy is made in the form of eggs and chickens and rabbits.
