Данный сборник содержит 19 текстов, поделенных на 2 части: 1 часть – система правления в Великобритании и 2 часть – система правления в США. Материал текстов взят из аутентичных источников и адаптирован составителем для работы со студентами заочной формы обучения.

Сборник содержит тексты для чтения объемом 19000 печатных знаков. Студенты должны выбрать тексты объемом 5000 знаков, причем равномерное количество из обеих частей. К каждому тексту даны пояснения к тем терминам, которые вызовут затруднения при переводе или которые трудно найти в словаре.

Работа с текстами способствует активизации навыка чтения и перевода, а также учит поисковой работе со словарем.

Part I

Great Britain

1 The System of Government

The Constitution provides for the three branches of power: Parliament, which makes laws; the government which executes laws, i.e. puts them into effect; and the law courts, which interpret laws. The official head of all three branches is the Queen.

Parliament has two parts: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Members of the House of Commons are elected by the voters of 650 constituencies. They are known as MPs, or Members of Parliament. The Prime Minister, or leader of the government, is also an MP, usually the leader of the political party with a majority in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister is advised by a Cabinet of about twenty other ministers. The Cabinet includes the ministers in charge of major government departments or ministries.

The House of Lords consists of the Lords Temporal and the Lords Spiritual. The Lords Spiritual are the Archbishops and senior bishops of the Church of England. The Lords Temporal consist of hereditary peers who inherit their titles and life peers, who are appointed by the queen for various services to the nation.
