The song I will do anything

Nancy: You do love me Bill, don’t you?

Bill: Of course, I do. I live with you, don’t I!

Bill gives the stolen goods to Fagin

Fagin: Beautiful, isn’t it? Bill? You’ve done well, Bill. All one job. Such a professional!

Bill: Cash, Fagin, I want my money for that.

Fagin: Tomorrow, Bill, my word on it!

Bill: What are you doing to these boys, Fagin?.. I am surprised they don’t murder you.

Fagin: Quiet, Mr Sikes. Don’t speak so loud. You seem angry today.

Bill: Perhaps I am. Give me a drink, Fagin. And don’t put poison in it.

Charlie: We have a little trouble, Mr Sikes…

Noah: And I am afraid it is much worse for you, than for us.

Bill: What on earth has again happened!?

Dodger: One of our boys is not with us any more… He is either in the police or somewhere else – but anyway he can tell them about our business…

Bill: Damn your boys! We’ve got to get him back, do you hear?

Fagin: It’s going to be done quiet, no fuss. Somebody should go to the police and find out, what has happened to Oliver… Bet will go, won’t you, my dear?..

Bet: Where?

Fagin: Just to the police station to find Oliver…

Bet: No!

Bill: What do you mean by that remark?

Bet: What I say, I am not going.

Fagin: Nancy, my dear, what do you say?

Nancy: No. Why can’t you leave the boy alone? He won’t do you no harm.

Bet: Why don’t leave him where he has a chance of decent life?

Bill: You’ll bring him back, will you? (strangles her)

Fagin: Nancy, my dear, We must have the boy brought back, if he talked, think what would happen to us, to Bill – the gallows…

Bill: She'll go, Fagin.

Nancy: No, she won't, Fagin.

Bill: Yes she will, Fagin. Nancy, you want to live, don’t you? So you’ll go.

Fagin: What will she say there, Bill?..

Bill: Nancy, show your skills to Fagin.

Nancy: Oh, my brother! My poor, dear, sweet, innocent little brother! What has become of him! Where have they taken him to! Oh, do have pity, and tell me what's been done with the dear boy,

gentlemen; do, gentlemen, if you please, gentlemen!

Fagin: Ah, she is a clever girl, my dear. Good girl, clever girl.

Bill: She is an honour to her sex. Here is her health, and I wish all women will be like her.

Nancy: As long as he needs me I’ll play the game his way

Fagin: So, my dear Bill… I hope you and Nancy will find Oliver and bring him back to me.

Bill: We will. No doubt.

At Mr. Brownlow’s – Oliver, Mrs Bedwin and Mr. Brownlow.

The Song/Music “Mother”

Oliver: Such a beautiful picture…She is a very pretty lady, isn’t she?

Bedwin: Are you fond of pictures, dear?

Oliver: I don’t know, I’ve seen very few. That lady has a beautiful face! But her eyes are so sad and they follow me when I move.

Bedwin: Oh! Don’t talk in that way, child! You are weak after your illness!

Brownlow: Mrs. Bedwin, look at the portrait. Do you see a likeness to the lad? The eyes, the mouth, the head on the picture... They are all absolutely similar to Oliver’s.

Bedwin: That’s your niece, isn’t it?

Brownlow: That’s what I mean.

Bedwin: Wasn’t she the girl who…

Brownlow: Who ran away

Bedwin: A young innocent face, nothing more.

Brownlow: I am not so sure. (looks at Oliver) Born in a workhouse, that’s all he can tell us.

Oliver: Please let me stay with you, sir. Don’t send me away.

Brownlow: My dear child you can stay, I will never send you away, unless you give me a reason.

Oliver: I never, never will, sir.

Bedwin: You trust people too easily, sir. You took him on the street, you don’t know anything about him.

Brownlow: He is not lying to me!

Bedwin: If he is not, I will eat my head! (pause) These books must go back to the shop this evening, sir. Send Oliver with them. If you trust him, he will take books back for you.

Brownlow: Yes, I will. Oliver! Do you know where the bookshop is?

Oliver: I do, sir. I know where the shop is. Please let me take the books for you sir. I’ll be quick!

Brownlow: You will have to pay the man at the bookshop 4 pounds I that I owe him. Here is a 5 pound note. You must bring me back a pound change. You understand?

Oliver: Yes, sir.

Exit Oliver.

Brownlow: He will be back in 20 minutes.

Bedwin: In a new set of clothes, with a set of valuable books and 5 pounds in his pocket. And you expect him to come back? If he returns to this house, I will eat my head with my hat!

Oliver in the street and some passers-by.

Nancy: Oh, my dear brother!

Oliver: Who’s that? Why are you stopping me?

Nancy: I have found him! Oh, Oliver, Oliver! You are a bad boy, I have suffered so much!

Bill: Young Oliver? Come home to your poor mother, you young fool.

People: Yes, you bad boy. Go home to your poor mother and father!

Bill: What are these books? Have you been stealing? (drags him by the collar)

The lights go out and on again to show Fagin with his treasure.

Fagin: Money-money-money… Always sunny… In the rich men’s world.

A nock on the door. Fagin hides his treasure.

Fagin: Come in!

Enter Bill, Nancy, Toby, Oliver.

Bill: Here is your boy.

Toby: He really looks like a young gentleman, doesn’t he?

Dodger (to the boys): Oliver’s back. Look at his boots!

Charlie: And he’s got the books too.

Noah: Quite the little gentleman! Lovely bit of suit.

Fagin: Delighted to see you doing so well, my dear. Dodger will give you another suit in case you spoil the Sunday one. (To Bill) How did you find Oliver?

Bill: I think he was sent to the bookshop, as he had these books with him.

Fagin: Give them to me!

Toby: Shut up, the old Jew! That’s payment for our work!

Dodger: Look at this? (a five pound note)

Fagin: I’ll bank it for you, Oliver.

Bill: What’s that?

Fagin: That’s mine, ours.

Bill: You shall have the books. You hand it over, you, old skeleton! Get the books, you can start the library.

Oliver: They belong to the kind old gentleman who took me to his house. He looked after me when I was ill. Please send them back. He will think I stole them. Mr. Brownlow will be here after you if he finds out you’ve got his books and money.

Bill: What did you tell him about us?

Oliver: Nothing (hits Bill and runs from him or just runs away and the boys catch him).
