The Internet is probably the only place where the Chinese can say or write what they want. But a report says that China’s Internet is one of the most controlled in the world.
The government forbids foreign websites most of the time. Last week it banned YouTube because it showed policemen who beat Tibetan monks. The government also puts website owners into prison if they don’t publish what they want.
Still, the Internet stays a main source of information in China. Not all websites can be blocked. If the government closes down 10 of them 20 other pop up somewhere else.
On the one side normal people are happy that they can read and post lots of things on the net, on the other side there are many who are angry that the government controls it too much. A lot of good information never makes it online.
Website owners get regular suggestions from the government that tell them what they can and cannot publish. Last month, for example, Chinese news websites were not allowed to write about a big oil refinery and how it affects the environment. Entertainment websites cannot write reviews on foreign films without permission from the government.
It is one of the oldest PC games in the world and it's even older than Windows. To virtual aviators all over the globe the news came as a shock. After almost 30 years in the cockpit it's time to say good bye. Microsoft is shutting down its Flight Simulator.
Back in the early 80s when PCs only had little power and graphics were only black and white it was still exciting to see if you could land a Cessna on a bumpy airfield. Twenty seven years later Flight Simulator 10 uses the power of high tech Pentium Dual-Core PCs with powerful graphic cards. They can reproduce most of the world's airports in millions of colors in and show the pilot landscapes and cities in great detail.
Compared with today's computer games, where you can wipe out a whole army or manage a European football team throughout the season flying a Boeing 757 from Heathrow to New York doesn't seem much of a deal. But to gamers all over the world the Flight Simulator appearsto be close to thereal thing.
With the new release of Google Earth learning about our planet has become a lot more interesting and fun too. The program is a free web-based application that creates a virtual Earth from satellite pictures of every part of the globe. Users can zoom in on city blocks, rainforests or even motorways. The first version of Google Earth was released in 2005. In the past years it has been downloaded about 500 million times.
In earlier versions of the software users were only able to view the surface of our planet. Water was seen upon as only a dull bluesurface. Google Earth 5.0 changes that.
During two years of hard work Google’s developers have improved the program. Now it is possible to explore the oceans and the sky. It even includes a globe of the planet Mars. The company has also added other content like videos, photos and audio clips.
The content covers a wide range of topics. If you click on Hawaii, for example, you cannot only see satellite images of the islands but also learn about humpback whales. Clicking on a part of the Atlantic Ocean will bring forth images and videos of sunken ships like theTitanic.
