Feifei: Right, so, welcome, err… What did you say your name was?
Neil: It’s Neil.
Feifei: Oh yes, Neil. Welcome Neil to our office and as you can see we’re on the fifth floor. And our desks are just over here, OK?
Neil: OK…
Feifei: And you can use this desk here if you like, and if you look to your left the photocopier is just over there, can you see it?
Neil: Yes, I can see it, it’s just over there.
Feifei: And the loos are over there and the canteen is on the ground floor. Is that OK?
Neil: Yes, lovely, thank you. Can I get a cup of coffee?
Feifei: Oh yes, of course, let me show you how the coffee machine works.
Neil: Thanks very much.
Feifei: And if you need anything else, just ask.
Neil: If I need anything else, I’ll just ask.
Feifei: Oh yes, and welcome to the company.
Neil: Thank you!

Where the conversation takes place?
The first day in the office: rules
Neil: Hello, Feifei!
Feifei: Hi, Neil! How are you settling in?
Neil: Oh, quite well, everybody’s very friendly but there are still a few things I’m a bit confused about.
Feifei: Oh, anything I can help with?
Neil: Well yes, the thing is, I know we’re not allowed to smoke inside but what about outside? Are we allowed to smoke in the car park?
Feifei: No, I’m sorry but we’re not allowed. Smoking’s against company policy, even in the car park.
Neil: OK, I thought so. I just wanted to check. And I was wondering, what about wearing shorts at work? Is that allowed?
Feifei: No, wearing shorts, that’s a big no-no.
Neil: Hmm, I saw Charlie wearing shorts on Monday and I thought -
Feifei: Noooo… Monday was his day off and he just popped in to pick something up. Wearing jeans at work is against company policy, definitely. It’s not very business-like.
Neil: Oh, right, I see. OK and I wanted to go home early on Friday. I guess that’s not allowed either, is it?
Feifei: No, I’m afraid it isn’t.

Asking for a pay rise
Neil: Hi, are you free for a quick chat?
Feifei: Sure, What can I do for you?
Neil: OK. Well, it’s a bit difficult, but I think I should have a pay rise.
Feifei: OK and why do you feel like that?
Neil: Well, I’ve taken on a lot more responsibility recently and I really believe that I’ve grown in the job. My last project was very successful and I just think I should be rewarded.
Feifei: OK, well, what kind of rise are you thinking of?
Neil: Well, I think that 5% isn’t too much to ask.
Feifei: 5%... Hmm… Well I’ll think about it and get back to you.
Neil: OK, thank you.
