Раздел 1. Общие рекомендации по составлению письменных текстов разных видов

Изучите следующие рекомендации по написанию составлению письменных текстов разных видов. На данном этапе обучения вашей задачей является составление аргументированного эссе (‘for and against’ essay), сочинения-описания (‘descriptive composition’), рассказа от первого или третьего лица (‘first-person or third-person narration’), или эссе, где вы высказываете свое мнение по проблеме (‘opinion essay’).

Используйте во время подготовки вашего письменного текста представленные ниже советы и планы. Проконсультируйтесь с преподавателем накануне предъявления эссе/сочинения/рассказа на проверку (в случае, если у вас возникают вопросы по содержанию или оформлению работы).

1. ‘For and Against’ Essay

‘For and against’ essays are one type of discursive writing in which you discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a specific topic. A ‘For and against’ essay should consist of:

a) an introduction in which you present the topic, making a general remark about it without giving your opinion;

b) a main body in which you present the points for and the points against, in separate paragraphs, supporting your arguments with justifications/examples;

c) a conclusion which includes your opinion (e/g/ In my opinion/view, I believe/think, etc) or a balanced summary of the topic.

• You must not include opinion words (I believe, I think, etc) in the introduction or the main body. Opinion words can only be used in the final paragraph, where you may state your opinion on the topic.

• ‘For and against’ essays are normally written in a formal style; therefore you should avoid using strong language (I know, I am sure, etc), short sentences, colloquial expressions or idioms.

Useful expressions and linking words/phrases

• To list and add points: In the first place, To start/begin with, Secondly, Thirdly, Finally, In addition (to this), Furthermore, Moreover, Besides, etc

• To introduce or list advantages: The main/first/most important advantage of …, One/Another/An additional advantage of …, One point of view in favour of …, It is often suggested/believed/argued that …, Some/Many people suggest/feel/argue that …, Some/many people are in favour of/are convinced that … etc.

• To introduce or list advantages: The main/first/most important disadvantage/drawback of …, One/Another/An additional disadvantage of …, One point/argument against …, Some/many people are against … etc.

Советы по написанию сочинений “ For and Against”:

• Разделите текст на смысловые абзацы в соответствии с предложенным в задании планом. В первом абзаце сформулируйте проблему, которую вы будете обсуждать, однако не повторяйте тему сочинения слово в слово.

• Представьте, что ваш читатель не знает, о чем пойдет речь, и попытайтесь объяснить ему проблему другими словами.

• Выделите положительные и отрицательные стороны проблемы, подумайте о разумных аргументах, в поддержку обеих точек зрения.

• Помните, что вы должны выразить не только свою точку зрения, но и противоположную. Также не забудьте объяснить, почему вы не согласны с другой точкой зрения.

• Старайтесь соблюдать баланс между абзацами.

• Используйте слова-связки, чтобы помочь читателю проследить за логикой ваших рассуждений. Помните, что вводные слова выделяются запятыми.

• В последнем абзаце сделайте обобщающий вывод по данной проблеме. Вы можете также окончательно сформулировать свое мнение или предложить пути решения данной проблемы.

• Используйте формальный стиль письма: не пользуйтесь сокращениями (don’t, can’t, I’m, it’s); не используйте скобки или восклицательные знаки — это свойственно неформальному стилю письма; не начинайте предложения со слов and, but или also; в разговорном языке вы можете их использовать, но избегайте этого в сочинении; не употребляйте вводные слова, характерные для неформального стиля (well, to tell the truth и др.)

• Избегайте слишком простых предложений; объединяйте их в сложные, используя логические средства связи.

• Объем сочинения должен составлять не менее 200 слов

Клише для сочинений‘For and Against’:

2. ‘Opinion Essays’

Opinion essays are discursive essays in which you present your personal opinion on a particular topic. Your opinion must be started clearly and supported by justifications. You should also present the opposing viewpoint(s) in a separate paragraph.

An opinion essay should consist of:

1. an introduction, in which you introduce the subject and state your opinion clearly;

2. a main body, consisting of two more paragraphs (each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by reasons/examples), including a paragraph giving the opposing viewpoints supported by reasons/examples; and

3. a conclusion, in which you restate your opinion using different words.

Opinion essays are normally written in a formal style, therefore you should avoid using colloquial expressions, short forms or personal examples.

3. a conclusion, which includes your comments/feelings and/or recommendation.

1. an introduction, in which you give the name, time, place and reason(s) for celebrating;

Советы по составлению сочинения-описания человека:

• Прежде чем писать, подумайте о человеке, о котором вы будете писать. Желательно писать о том, кого знаешь, так как легче представить образ и составить план (см. тему 2.13 данных методических рекомендаций).

• Подберите яркие прилагательные, чтобы было интереснее читать, и набросайте их около каждого пункта вашего плана. Используйте контрасты, соединяя в одном предложении разные идеи.

• Используйте Present Tenses для того, чтобы описать человека, которого вы можете видеть и сейчас. О тех людях, кого уже нет в живых или кого вы знали в прошлом, а теперь вряд ли увидите, пишите с использованием Past Tenses.

• Используйте в вашем сочинении фразы-связки. Они сделают ваши высказывания более привлекательными и интересными: The reason why …is that…; as a result of this… even though/although…; nevertheless; especially, in particular; in conclusion/on the whole/to sum up/all in all.

• Старайтесь описывать не только положительные стороны, но и отрицательные. В противном случае ваше описание получится простым и однобоким.

• При описании отрицательных сторон не забывайте о вежливости высказываний. Используйте такие выражения: …has a tendency to be deceitful…; sometimes he can be aggressive and moody; …isn’t very beautiful…; …tends to be bossy.

• Напишите сочинение. После этого прочтите и убедитесь в его связности и отсутствии грамматических ошибок, и ошибок в правописания.

4. First-person Narratives

First-person narratives are written in the first-person (I/we) about a series of events, real or imaginary, which happened to us/ a first-person narratives should consist of:

1. an introduction, in which you set the scene (who was involved, time, place, etc) in an interesting way to make the reader want to continue reading;

2. a main body, consisting of two or more paragraphs, where you develop your story, presenting the events in order they happened; and

3. a conclusion, which includes what happened at the end of the story, as well as people’s feelings, final comments or reactions. A surprising ending makes a long-lasting impression on the reader.

Third-person Narratives

Third-person narratives are written in the third person (he/she/they/etc) and are real or imaginary stories about another person or other people. Like a first-person narrative should consist of:

1. an introduction, in which you set the scene (who was involved, time, place, etc) in an interesting way to make the reader want to continue reading;

2. a main body, consisting of two or more paragraphs, where you develop your story, presenting the events in order they happened; and

3. a conclusion, in which you say what happened at the end and refer to people’s feelings, final comments or reactions.
