Training, other qualifications and advancement
Approximately 25% of all students seeking a degree in engineering acquire one in electrical engineering. Electrical engineering is a high demand field that will continue to grow in strength as the demand for advanced technology and electronics increases.
Education and training
Obtaining a degree in electrical engineering requires a degree from a 4-year college or university that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Students with a bachelor’s or arts or bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering can then further their education by obtaining a master’s degree and/or a doctorate in electrical engineering.
Students wishing to earn a degree in electrical engineering, or any engineering field for that matter, should have an aptitude for mathematics and science, as these two fields form the foundation for the engineer. Most universities offer programs in engineering with concentrations in electrical engineering.
Core
curriculum
in these programs include courses in calculus, linear algebra,
discrete mathematics, and higher mathematics, physics, chemistry,
biology, and earth sciences.
Core classes also routinely require a student to complete classes in writing, ethics, and other humanities classes. Engineering classes are designed to arm a student with the necessary skills required to perform research as well as implement design and development methodology for product design. In addition to the core requirements, many programs also require a wide range of elective classes that are designed to broaden an electrical engineer’s knowledge base. Electrical engineering students often are required to take classes in computer science and material science as part of their degree programs.
