1. One в качестве местоимения-существительного употребляется в функции подлежащего, часто с модальным глаголам, в предложениях, соответствующих в русском языке неопределённо-личным предложениям:

One should be careful crossing the road.	Следует быть осторожным при переходе улицы.
One never knows what he can say.	Никогда не знаешь, что он ответить.

2. One употребляется во избежание повторения ранее упомянутого существительного в единственном числе – one; ones – существительного во множественном числе. В этом случае one/ones употребляются после прилагательных в положительной и сравнительной степени, после местоимений this, that, these, those, which, another, the other (иногда после the first, the next, the last).

I’ve read this book.	Я читал эту книгу.
Give me another one.	Дайте мне другую (книгу).
Here are some books.	Вот несколько книг.
Which ones would you like?	Какие бы (книги) вы хотели?
This book is more interesting than that one.	Это книга более интересная, чем та (книга).
These apples are sweeter than the ones I bought yesterday.	Эти яблоки слаще тех, которые я купил.

3. One не употребляется после притяжательных местоимений и после существительных в притяжательном падеже.

This isn’t my book.	Это моя ручка.
Mine is on the shelf.	Моя – на полке.
My pen is not good.	Моя ручка не очень хорошая.
Mike’s is much better.	Мишина – гораздо лучше.
