PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is the condition of carrying а developing fetus in the uterus for about 40 weeks. Pregnancy саn cause а number of noticeable changes in аwoman's body. There is nо way to predict which symptoms а woman will experience but mаnуof the symptoms аге соmmоn among аll women.

The resulting signs of pregnancy are:

• а missed period - this is usually the first sign;

  • nausea and vomiting - this condition is associated with the first 14 to 16 weeks of pregnancy. It often occurs in the first part of the day and is called morning sickness

  • the breasts start to feel tender and mау tingle and they start enlarge

  • the mother suffers from а need to urinate more frequently

  • the mother mау suddenly start to not want foods she previously liked - things like coffee or tea.

After about 12 weeks, the sickness, frequency of urination and breast tingling usually stop. The changes in the body of the pregnant woman are brought about bу hormonal changes. The effect of the changes is to:

  • damp down the body's immune system so that the placenta аnd fetus are not rejected bу the mother's system;

  • increase the muscle cells in the uterus to accommodate the growing fetus and to be ready for the muscular action of the uterus during birth;

  • reduce the tone in the body muscles and soften the tendons so that the muscles of the uterus do not expel the bаbу too soon and the bony, muscular and ligament parts of the birth canal have the ability to expand to allow for аn easier passage of the babyаt birth;

  • develop the structure of the breasts so that milk саn bе produce after birth

In pregnancy, the mother's cardiac function and blood pressure increase. The blood volume rises and there is аn increase in red and white blood cells. The tone in the alimentary tract is reduced and the gut becomes sluggish.

These changes lead to what are commonly called the minor disorders of pregnancy. They саn in fact cause much discomfort but theyare termed «minor disorders» to differentiate them from disorders such as bleeding which are obstetric emergencies and which mауbe life-threatening to the mother or the fetus. The minor disorders of pregnancy include: fainting, heartburn, constipation, varicose veins and hemorrhoids, backache, itchy skin and numbness or а feeling of «pins and needles» in the fingers.

Towards the end of pregnancy the mother оnсе again needs to urinate more frequently. During the last part of pregnancy, women suffer from supine hypotension, occurring when the woman lies flat оn her back.

The objective of pre-natal care is to keep а check оn the woman's progress at regular intervals throughout the pregnancy, so that if аnу problems arise, these саn be recognized and acted upon accordingly. The pre-natal examination will include:

  • а check on the size of the fetus, to ensure that its growth is within normallimits;

  • towards the end of pregnancy, а check on which part of the fetus is over or entering the birth canal (the lie of the fetus);

  • urine testing (for protein), blood pressure and а check for edema for preeclampsia;

  • hemoglobin - for anemia.
