8. When things go wrong. Complete the following sentences with the words and phrases below:

Your ex-wife or ex-husband is the person you were married to before your divorce. When people are speaking, they often just say ex - "I got divorced last year but I still see my ex sometimes".

9. Study the new vocabulary before you read the dialogue.

1) to peg for - make an assumption about someone or something.

e.g. I didn’t peg Molly for being a hockey fan.

2) rate - percentage as compared with others.

e.g. Niger has the lowest literacy rate in the world. Only 14% of people there can read and write.

3) to commit -make a choice and stick to it.

e.g. Kristin can’t decide whether or not she wants to commit to spending the rest of her life with Joe.

4) indicative- telling, sending a certain message.

e.g. I don’t think the fact that John likes to go out with his friends is indicative that he’s cheating on you.

5) divorce- end of a marriage, separation of two married people, split.

e.g. My mom and dad got a divorce because they didn’t love each other anymore.

6) tabloid- type of media that reports gossip about celebrities.

e.g. My best friend’s mom is really into tabloids. She can always give me a good piece of gossip about the stars.

7) headline- title of a news story.

e.g. Michael Jackson’s death was in the headlines of all the U.S. newspapers.

8) to split up- break up; end a relationship.

e.g. Annie decided to split up with her boyfriend when she found out he had cheated on her.

9) sacrifice- something you give up for a goal or to help others; ritual offerings.

e.g. I made a lot of sacrifices to get where I am today.

10) famous- well known, known by many people.

e.g. Michael Jordan is one of the most famous athletes in the world.

10. Read the introduction and comment on it.

In the US, about 40% of marriages end in the divorce. That’s a lot. But it seems like divorce is even more common among celebrities. Nearly every time you pick up a tabloid, there’s a headline about a couple splitting up on its cover. Whether it’s because of their busy careers, the pressures of fame, or the temptation of being constantly surrounded by other attractive people, it sometimes seems like famous people just can’t manage to stay married.
