How to Manage Your Time Effectively
It's important that you develop effective strategies and skills for managing your time for study, leisure, earning money. Some of these skills include setting clear goals, breaking your goals down into steps, reviewing your progress towards your goals, prioritizing – focusing on urgent and important tasks; organizing your work schedule; list making to remind you of what you need to do; persevering when things are not working out and avoiding procrastination.
Keep to a to-do list
A daily list of tasks that need to be done is very important. Prioritize items on the list into important/not important and urgent/non-urgent.
Prioritize
Efficiency and effectiveness are not the same. Someone who works hard and is well organized but spends all their time on unimportant tasks may be efficient but not effective. To be effective, you need to decide what tasks are urgent and important and to focus on these. This is called prioritizing. Differentiate also between urgent and important tasks: an urgent task may not necessarily be important!
Avoid Procrastination
The best time to do something is usually NOW.
Break down tasks
Break goals down into their components so that you can accomplish them one step at a time. Reward yourself for achieving these goals to maintain your enthusiasm.
Persevere
Things will not always run smoothly. When things are not working out, you need to persevere. Mistakes are a vital part of any creative process. It is said that the people who have achieved the most have made the most mistakes!
Organize your time using a time log
Identify areas of your life where you are wasting time and try to reduce these. A good way to do this is to log everything you do for a week in detail and then examine your record to see how you use (or misuse!) your time. Develop a regular work routine. Keep your work space tidy. Work to schedule so that you meet deadlines.
Some tips on revising for examinations
*Plan out a revision schedule or timetable so you devote enough time to each subject.
*Summarize your lecture notes. Use a highlighter pen to emphasize key facts.
*For last minute revision, make minimal notes.
*When revising, take a few minutes break to refresh your mind and allow some time off for complete relaxation.
Answer the questions:
1. What do effective skills for managing time include?
2. What is prioritizing?
3. Which of the given tips on examination revision do you follow?
Making better use of time is becoming an increasingly essential feature of our life. Read some examples of time-saving tactics, rank them from 1 to 6 as the most helpful.
Create a ‘to do’ list. Every evening jot down the top 20 tasks to be done the next day, and review the list several times throughout the day. The best way to accomplish what’s on the list is to give each task a specific time slot.
Do it now. Many people waste too much time preparing to do something that they often have no time left to do it. Just dive in and you’ll be surprised at how fast you get things done.
The 80/20 Rule. Stay focused on priorities and allow more time (80%) for the most important things.
Know when to say ‘No’. Try to stay firm to save more time for yourself, turning down an invitation, missing an event, or telling someone they can’t come visit.
Use technology.
Notes:
jot down – кратко записать, набросать
You want to give the impression of being a person who manages his (her) time. You are very efficient. How do you manage your time? Which of the time-saving techniques do you use in your everyday practice? Share your ideas.
Practice the conversation with a partner. Dramatize it.
- I’ve got a good idea. How about going out together?
- I’d love to, but I’ll have an exam in two days. I have to revise day and night.
- In two days? And I’ll have my English exam tomorrow.
- Don’t you feel nervous?
- Of course, I do, but I have worked hard over my English the whole academic year. And I hope everything will be OK.
- How did you manage your time to be a success? As for me English has always been a great challenge since my school years.
- Have you ever heard about time-saving skills? As a matter of fact I have always been keeping to the priorities.
- What do you mean?
- When doing my homework I try to give the priority to the most difficult subjects getting ready for which takes much time.
- And I prefer to do what I like first and then, if time left, I come to the subjects I like least.
- It is not surprising that you’ve got such troubles with your English. Learning languages is really time-consuming process which requires many efforts and everyday revision. I really recommend you to follow my strategy. Besides, I can share my English learning techniques. Then, no doubt, you’ll make progress in English.
- I’ll be pleased to listen to your tips.
Comment on the time management quotes. Which of them do you like best? Why?
1. Don't wait. The time will never be just right. (Napoleon Hill) 2. All great achievements require time. (Maya Angelou)
3. The time for action is now. It's never too late to do something. (Antoine de Saint-Exupery)
