The past continuous is used:
in contrast with the past simple
to describe events happening at a specific time
We were camping in France when forest fires broke out.
What were you doing at ten o’clock last night?
I was having coffee with a fried.
Some men were playing ‘boules’.

Short answer Positive
Yes, you had.
Short answer Negative
No, you hadn’t
. The past perfect is used:
to describe an event which occurred
before another in the past
in reported statements
in reported questions
When he arrived at the station, the train had left.
She said (that) she had met him a year ago.
They asked her why she had gone to the grocer’
