6. Сравнительные и превосходные степени прилагательных old и far

far: farther, the farthest употребляются, когда речь идет о расстоянии, further, the furthest  когда речь идет о времени.

Odessa is farther from Moscow than Kiev is.

Don't do it further.

old: older, the oldest применяется, когда речь идет о возрасте, elder, the eldest  когда речь идет о старшинстве в семье (elder употребляется только перед существительными).

Moscow is older than Odessa.

It is the oldest house in the city.

He is the eldest son in the family.

She is my elder sister.

7. Сравнения с конструкцией as … as

This boy is as tall as his father is. Этот мальчик такой же высокий, как его отец.

This boy is as tall as he. Этот мальчик такой же высокий, как он.

В отрицательных предложениях также применима конструкция soas.

This boy isn't so tall as he. Этот мальчик не такой высокий, как он.

He has as much money as his sister has.

He has as many friends as she has.

He doesn’t have so many familiars as she has.

There are four seasons in a year: autumn, winter, spring and summer.

December, January and February are winter months. Winter is the coldest season. It snows in winter. The temperature is below zero. It is usually cloudy. On the twenty second of December we have the shortest day and the longest night in the year. The sea is rough in winter. There are gales over the sea.

March, April and May are spring months. In spring the days are longer and the nights are shorter than in winter. In spring the weather is not so cold as in winter. It gets warmer and warmer. It is usually sunny. The sky is blue.

June, July and August are summer months. On the twenty second of June we have the longest day and the shortest night. Summer is the warmest season in a year. It is sunny. The sky is cloudless. Sometimes we have thunderstorms in summer. The sea is calm in summer.

September, October and November are autumn months. In autumn the days are shorter and the nights are longer than in summer. The sky is often cloudy. It is foggy and windy. It rains. The weather is often nasty. It gets colder. In December winter comes back.
