HOW TO BE A GREAT MANAGER

Opportunities for a business career have grown today and a manager’s job can be an exciting career for a person.

What is a manager’s job? The characteristics of management often vary according to national culture, which can determine how managers are trained, how they lead people and how they approach their jobs. But in any country a manager is a very difficult position. No wonder, they say a manager does not have a single job, but a series of jobs. In order to become a manager a person must possess certain skills.

What makes a good manager? In general, successful managers tend to have the following characteristics:

- they possess executive skills;

- they take enormous pleasure and pride in the growth of their people;

- they are basically cheerful optimists;

- they don’t promise more they can deliver;

- they show a clear example to their staff by working hard at their jobs.

Manager’s job is to make sure his department operates smoothly under his direction. That means running the department by using the available resources, including his staff - optimally and delegating skillfully. To delegate effectively is to manage effectively.

Speaking skills are particularly important for managers. They should use simple, direct and appropriate language and clearly define how job must be done.

A manager is a creator. He must organize people and direct them. He should encourage his employees to work individually and take an interest in their work. Individual performance must be measured and initiative must be rewarded.

A good manager should be a good decision maker. He must be able to predict any problems and analyze them in details before taking decisions. He should be ready to sacrifice a lot for the sake of his company’s success. If something is wrong, a good manager accepts full responsibility.

It is very important for a manager to continue education and training at work. A good manager learns new skills and acquires useful information from the outside world because he should be aware of all business events and all changes concerning his work.

All these things mentioned above will make you a great manager, if you decide to choose a manager’s career.

Dr. W. EDWARDS DEMING

“We have learned to live in a world of mistakes and defective products as if they were necessary to life. It is time to adopt a new philosophy in America.”

Dr. W. Edwards Deming is known as the leading quality guru in the United States. Trained as a statistician, his expertise was used during World War II to assist the United States to improve the quality of war materials.

In the 1950s Deming went to Japan and gave seminars to Japan’s top management at the request of the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers. They asked Dr. W. Edwards Deming how long it would take to shift the perception of the world from existing paradigm that Japan produced cheap shoddy imitation to one producing innovative quality products.

Dr. Deming told the group that if they followed his instructions they could achieve the desired outcome in five years. Some of the leaders were skeptical, but they were ashamed to say so and would be embraced if they failed to follow his suggestions. As

Dr. Deming told it, “They surprised me and did it in four years.”

He was invited back to Japan time after time where he became a revered counselor.

For his efforts he was awarded the Second Order of the Sacred Treasure by the former Emperor Hirohito.

With stiff competition from the Japanese American companies began to see their own failing in quality and productivity. In his book “Out of the Crisis “aimed at American Management, Deming voices his concerns about America as a nation. He states that with the skills and knowledge so underutilized in America, “The United States may be the most underdeveloped country in the world.”

Deming believes that people can do their best and it is the system, not people that must change to improve quality. Deming manages to summarize his management theories into 14 points, which can be applied to almost any successful implementation of TQM (Total Quality Management).
