I. An analysis of the history of study and synonymy

The studies of the genus Echis (evolution of conception of the genus and its taxonomic structure) are analyzed. The validity of all nominal species and subspecies described by various authors is discussed. New taxonomic structure of the genus (3 subgenera, 12 species and 8 subspecies) is proposed. A new list of taxa supplied with synonymies is compiled.
