Задание 2. Прочитайте сочинение студента «Поход в театр». Переведите текст.
To begin with I’d like to say that the theatre is a great means of promoting culture among people. It’s often called «the Temple of Art» because it educates, relaxes, entertains and shows us how wonderful the world around us is. There is a great variety of theatres in Moscow and the most difficult things for the theatre -goers is to decide which theatre to go to. Some theatres are more popular with the public than others, that’s why it’s almost impossible to get tickets when a good play is on. If you managed to get tickets, you will enjoy the performance from the very beginning to the end.
I’ll never forget my first visit to the Bolshoi Opera House. My friend and I wanted to see the famous ballet the Swan Lake by P.E. Tchaikovsky, the Great Russian composer. We bought the tickets in advance. It was an evening performance and we came half an hour before the show. We bought a play bill and find out what the cast was. We were glad to know that the leading parts were acted by the talented young dancers. Than my friend and I took our seats in stalls not far from the stage. Though it wasn’t the first night but there was a full audience at the theatre. Soon the lights went down and the curtain went up. As soon as the music started the public cheered enthusiastically and began to applaud.
From the very first minute I was deeply impressed by everything I saw on the stage and followed the play with the great interest. The setting and dancing were excellent. The customs were fine and the scenery and the music were brilliant. The ballet seemed to me as the beautiful fairy tale and the atmosphere was really magical. I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. After the first act we went to look over the theatre. We saw boxes, the orchestra pit, the dress – circle and the gallery. There were many portraits of opera – singers and the ballet dancers on the walls of the foyer.
I was especially charmed by the «Small Swans’ dance». When the curtain fell of the end of the performance there was a storm of applause. The dancers were presented with flowers. The performance was a great success with the public. In a word my first visit to the Bolshoi Opera House gave me unforgettable impressions!.....

Nick: I say, Helen, have you got anything special on tomorrow night?
Helen: No, not really. Why?
Nick: I suggest our going to the theatre.
Helen: I’d love to. What are we going to the theatre.
Nick: I’ve got two tickets for “Lady Windermere’s Fan” by Oscar Wilde. It’s the first night.
Helen: Oh, it’s at the Maly Theatre, isn’t it?
Nick: I have heard the play is worth seeing. It is staged very well. The scenery is simple, but good and the acting is splendid.
Helen: And what about the seats? I hope they are not in the balcony or in the gallery?
Nick: Oh, dear, no. They are in the dress circle, box 5.
Helen: Let’s hope we’ll enjoy ourselves. Will you call for me or will we meet at the theatre?
Nick: I’d rather call for you. I don’t like waiting and you take such a long time to get ready.
Helen: So I do. But I love to look smart when I go to the theatre.
Nick: All right, then. I’ll call for you at 5.30.
Helen: That’s suits me perfectly. I’ll be waiting for you.

The Englishmen are known to be great sports-lovers. One of the most popular British games is cricket, which foreigners can hardly understand. Cricket is played by two teams of 11 men. Players usually wear white clothes. Cricket is a very slow game. Matches last from one to five days. It is played all over the country in summer. To many Englishmen cricket is both a game and a standard of behavior. When they consider anything unfair, they say "That's not cricket."
Another game which attracts the greatest attention is soccer. There are plenty of soccer clubs in every town. The Cup Final played in London is the main event of the football season. Rugby football is also very popular, but it is played mainly by amateurs. It's a kind of English football in which the players use their hands for carrying the ball. This game is played by teams of 15 men with an oval ball.
Golf began to develop in Scotland and now is widely spread all over Britain. A great number of people play and watch tennis. The most famous tennis tournament is the one in Wimbledon. Horse racing is also extremely popular in Great Britain. The racing season includes five races. The Derby is one of the most famous sporting events in the whole world. The English also like playing golf, baseball, basketball and bowling. Athletic sports such as running, jumping, rowing, swimming, boxing and gymnastics are practiced at schools and colleges. The annual Oxford-Cambridge boat race on the river Thames attracts lots of people and is very popular. In Scotland where there are good conditions for winter sports skiing is very popular.
Sport probably plays a more important part in people's lives in Britain than it does in most other countries. Millions of people take part in some kind of sport at least once a week.
