The elements of a circuit

The elements of a circuit are a voltage source, a resistor, and a conductor. The circuit consists of a voltage source, a resistor and a conductor. A voltage source supplies current. A resistor reduces current. A conductor connects the elements of the circuit. Current passes through circuit if it doesn’t have an open. An open and a short are troubles in a circuit. A trouble in a circuit may result in no current in it.

1. What are the elements of a circuit?

2. What does a voltage source supply?

3. What is the function of resistor?

2. Find the correct variant.

  1. A parallel circuit has

  1. Parallel branch only

  1. A parallel circuit is used in order

  1. To have the same value of current in all the elements

  2. To have the same value of voltage in all the elements

  1. In a parallel circuit a trouble in one branch

  2. results in no current in the whole circuit

  1. no current in a parallel circuit

  1. results from a trouble in one branch

  2. results from a trouble in the main line.

Types of circuit

If the circuit consists of a voltage source and two resistors connected in series, this is a parallel circuit. It has the main lines and parallel branches. If resistors are connected in series – it’s a series circuit. The value of voltage is the same in all the elements of a parallel circuit while the value of current is different. A parallel circuit is used in order to have the same value of voltage. The value if current is the same in all the elements of a series circuit while the value of voltage is the different.

A series circuit is used in order to have the same value of current. In series circuit a trouble can result in no current in the whole circuit. In a parallel circuit a trouble in one branch results in no current in that branch only.

1. Does a series circuit have parallel branches?

2. Is the value of voltage the same in all the elements of a parallel circuit?

3. Is the value of current the same in all the elements of a parallel circuit?

2. Find the correct variant.

Meters

The most common meters used are the ohmmeter, ammeter and the voltmeter. The ohmmeter is used to measure the value of resistance. It consists of a milliammeter calibrated to read in ohms, a battery and a resistor. The meter is connected in parallel and the circuit is not opened when its resistance is measured. The readings on the scale show the measured value.

The ammeter is used to measure the value of current. When the ammeter is used the circuit should be opened at one point and the terminals of the meter should be connected to it. One should take into consideration that the positive terminal of the meter is connected to the positive terminal of the source.

1. What are the most common meters?

2. What is ammeter used for?

3. What is the function of ohmmeter?

2. Find the correct variant.

  1. A resistor is used

  1. To measure the resistance

  2. To reduce the current

  3. To change the resistance

  4. To produce the IR voltage drop

  1. When current passes through a resistor

  1. Its temperature drops

  2. Its temperature rises

  1. Resistors are rated

  2. In volts

  3. In watts

  1. Power is given

  1. In amperes

  2. In watts
