IV. Open the brackets, using verbs in Present Perfect or Past Simple.

1. Last night I (to feel) tired and (to go) to bed very early. 2. Where you (to spend) your holidays? 3. You ever (to spend) your holidays in the Crimea? 4. While travelling in the Crimea I (to meet) your friend. 5. I never (to visit) that place. 6. He (to visit) that place last year. 7. I just (to get) a letter from Tom. 8. You (to take) any photographs while travelling in the south? 9. He (to be) abroad five years ago. 10. You (to be) in the Caucasus last year? 11. They (to leave) England when he (to be) still a child. 12. He (not yet to come) back. 13. The children already (to decide) what to do with the books. 14. Yesterday they (to decide) to help their grandmother. 15. I (not to see) you for a long time. I (to see) you in town two or three days ago, but you (not to see) me. I (to be) on a bus.

V. Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Simple or the Past Continuous tense.

1. The admiral (play) bowls when he received news of the invasion. He (insist) on finishing the game. 2. My dog (walk) along quietly when Mr Pitt's Pekinese attacked him. 3. When I arrived she (have) lunch. She apologized for starting without me but said that she always (lunch) at 12.30. 4. He always (wear) a raincoat and (carry) an umbrella when he walked to the office. 5. What you (think) of his last book? ~ I (like) it very much. 6. I (share) a flat with him when we were students. He always (complain) about my untidiness. 7. He suddenly (realize) that he (travel) in the wrong direction.

VI. Put the verbs in brackets into the Present Perfect Continuous tense.

1. How long you (wait) for me? ~ I (wait) about half an hour. 2. It (rain) for two days now. There'll be a flood soon. 3. We (argue) about this for two hours now. Perhaps we should stop! 4. I (bathe). That's why my hair is all wet. 5. You (drive) all day. Let me drive now. 6. How long you (wear) glasses? 7. The petrol gauge (say) 'Empty' for quite a long time now. Don't you think we should get some petrol?

VII. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English.

1. Когда ты был в отпуске последний раз? — Прошлой зимой. — Как ты его провел? — Прекрасно. Ходил на лыжах, катался на коньках. 2. Когда ты позвонил вчера, я был занят. Я переводил наш новый контракт. 3. Вчера я опоздал на урок английского языка. Когда я пришел, студенты писали сочинение. 4. Аня подмела пол, вымыла посуду, а потом стала готовить домашнее задание. 5. Вчера мы купались, загорали, катались на лодке, играли в теннис. Мы очень хорошо провели время. 6. Шел ли дождь, когда ты вышел из дома?

VIII. Put the following into the Passive Voice. The agent should not be mentioned except in number 4.

1. Somebody had slashed the picture with a knife. 2. They are pulling down the old theatre. 3. Why didn't they mend the roof before it fell in? 4. The mob broke all the shop windows in recent riots. 5. The librarian said that they were starting a new system because people were not returning books. 6. The police asked each of us about his movements on the night of the crime. 7. Someone will serve refreshments. 8. The police shouldn't allow people to park there. 9. They are watching my house. 10. The examiner will read the passage three times.
