Family Dialogue
A Liza, hi!
B Hello, Tanya! How are you?
A I’m fine. We haven’t seen each other for two whole days. I’ve got so much to tell you!
B Yes, these two days have been very busy for me too. The relatives of sister’s fiance have arrived. Four people. Imagine it!
A Yes, I don’t envy you. Where are they from?
B They’re actually really nice people. They live in the Urals, in Yekaterinburg. It’s Sergei’s grandmother and great-aunt (they’re twins) and his mother and father.
A And does Sergei have a twin? It often runs in the family.
B Yes, he has a twin brother. They’re as alike as two peas in a pod. Only my sister and I can tell them apart.
A And why didn’t he come to the wedding?
B Pavel lives here. He’s studying at the naval training college, and living there. To tell you the truth, I really fancy him.
A Is Sergei older than your sister Ann or are they the same age?
B Ann is younger than her husband-to-be by three years. He’s 25.
A So that means that Pavel is ten years older than you? Don’t you think that’s a bit of an age gap?
B I don’t really think so. Anyway, it’s a bit too soon to think about that.
A Well, it’s up to you. But I prefer them the same age as me.
B Oh, Tanya! I’ve got to run. Pavel’s due to phone. See you!

Б Добрый день, Таня! Как поживаешь?
А Всё отлично. Мы с тобой не виделись целых два дня. Я должна тебе многое рассказать!
Б Да, и у меня эти два дня были очень напряжёнными. Приехали родственники жениха моей сестры. Четыре человека, представляешь?
А Да, вам не позавидуешь. А откуда они?
Б Вообще-то они очень симпатичные люди. Они живут на Урале, в Екатеринбурге. Бабушка и двоюродная бабушка (они сёстры-близнецы), мать и отец Сергея.
А А у Сергея есть брат-близнец? Ведь это обычно передаётся по наследству.
Б Да, у него есть брат. Они похожи друг на друга как две капли воды. Только мы с сестрой их различаем.
А А почему же он не приехал на свадьбу?
Б Павел живёт здесь. Он учится в военно-морском училище и там живёт. Честно говоря, он мне очень нравится.
А А Сергей старше твоей сестры Ани, или они ровесники?
Б Аня младше своего будущего мужа на три года. Ему 25 лет.
А Значит, Павел старше тебя на десять лет? Тебе не кажется, что это очень большая разница в возрасте?
Б Я так не думаю. Но вообще рано о чём-либо говорить.
А Что ж, это твоё дело. А мне больше нравятся сверстники.
Б Ох, Таня, извини, мне пора бежать. Должен позвонить Павел. Пока!

A Hi, Kostya. Have you done your life story?
B No, is it really necessary?

B You know, I’m just remembering with the deepest gratitude our Russian teacher, because she gave us the basics of writing. So I think we’ll manage.
A Let’s have a go.
B Right. So first of all you should give your name, date of birth, place of birth.
A No problem. My name is Dmitri (Christian name) Manuilov (surname). Born 19th March 1983 in Saint Petersburg. Still domiciled here.
B Same here. Now your family. But not too much detail. Just the main facts. I can do it without any difficulties. Mother, father and myself.
A My family consists of 5 people. We all get on well. Father works in a factory as a shop floor manager, mum’s a nurse at the local surgery, my elder brother is a student in his 3rd year and my younger sister is still at school Class 8.
B Excellent. Now give a bit more detail about yourself and your studies, please.
A I’m about to leave school and go into higher education. I do a lot of studying as well as attending various foundation courses at the University.
B I think you’ve got to say something about sport here – especially if you’re applying to a military school.
A I’m going to say that I did some boxing and played tennis. Besides I’ve been playing basketball since class 5 at the Tractor Factory Club.
