Every computer incorporates software and hardware. Hardware includes machinery and devices. Software includes systems and programs. At present time there are many various types of digital computers. They are categorized from the largest and the most powerful to the smallest and less powerful: 1) supercomputer, 2) mainframe computer, 3) minicomputer, 4) microcomputer. While all digital computers have common basic elements, they vary widely in size, cost and computing power. Minicomputers are, for example, miniature of general-purpose digital computers. The important feature of minicomputers is the broad range of software available. The development of minicomputers and their installation in aircraft have provided a means for the continuous monitoring of flight conditions and mechanical performance. Minicomputers provide aircraft crew with the information needed for navigational purposes, give warning of malfunction and indicate corrective action. Minicomputers are used to process data relating to aircraft movements in order to compute flight paths, take-off and landing schedules, etc., to maximize safety and reliability.
Modem computers are electronic calculators and data processors that enable men to perform certain types of work faster and more accurately than with other methods. Computers automate many of man's most tedious jobs. They are highly powerful tools that affect nearly all our lives. In general, computers have made our lives easier and have permitted us to do things that we could not do before.

Fax Machines
A fax machine - or facsimile transmission machine - scans an image and sends it as electronic signals over telephone lines to a receiving fax machine, which recreates the image on paper. (Facsimile means "an exact copy.")
Dedicated fax machines. Generally called simply "fax machines," dedicated fax machines are specialized devices that do nothing except send and receive fax documents. They are found not only in offices and homes but also alongside regular phones in public places such as airports.
Fax modem: A fax modem is installed as a circuit board inside the computer's system cabinet. It is a modem with fax capability that enables you to send signals directly from your computer to someone else's stand-alone fax machine or internal computer fax modem. With this device you do not have to print out the material from your computer printer and then run it through a fax-machine scanner. The fax modem allows you to send information more quickly than if you had to feed it page by page into a fax-machine.
