Laboratory Work Conditionals

Conditional I

I. A) Rewrite the sentences making the if clause negative. Make any necessary changes to the main clause to keep the same meaning.

Example

  • If you work hard, you’ll pass your exams.

  • If you don’t work hard, you won’t pass your exams.

  • If you go to the market early, you’ll get some fresh fish.

  • If you hurry, you’ll catch the bus.

  • If sell my car, I’ll be able to afford a holiday.

  • If it’s sunny, we’ll go to the beach.

  • If get a residence permit, I’ll be able to stay in the USA.

b) Rewrite the sentences using unless.

Example

You won’t pass your exams unless you work hard.

II. Reply to the questions on the left choosing from the list on the right. Start with I’ll/we’ll … as soon as …

Example

1. When are we going to eat?

b) We’ll eat as soon as John gets back.

  1. When are we going to eat? a) I finish reading it.

  2. When are you going to do your homework? b) John gets back.

  3. Aren’t you going to leave soon? c) I get a free weekend.

  4. When can you lend me that book? d) this program finishes.

III. Complete the conversation between Angie and her mother by writing the correct form of the verb in brackets.

Mother: I’m off to work now. What time will you be back?

Angie: About six. But I (ring) you if there (be) any problems.

Mother: Well, if you (be) back before me, you (have to) get something for supper.

Angie: O.K., I (decide) on something when I (get) to the supermarket.

Mother: If I (pass) a greengrocer’s, I (buy) some strawberries.

Angie: Great!

Mother: Is Colin coming round tonight?

Angie: He didn’t say but if he (get in touch), I (invite) him to supper.

IV. Complete the sentences with some tips of your own.
