1.2. Словосложение

Отличительной чертой терминологии является растущая тенденция к образованию новых слов, состоящих из двух основ, причем сложные слова могут быть образованы сочетаниями различных частей речи. Например:

readonly – глагол + наречие;

database – существительное + существительное;

built-in – причастие+ предлог;

backup – прилагательное + предлог;

setup – глагол + предлог.

Упражнение 6. Переведите словосочетания со сложными словами, используя специальный словарь при необходимости:

1. Runtime diagnostics,

2) computer-assisted language learning,

3) stand-alone computer,

4) difficult-to-locate error,

5) self-test equipment,

6) plug-compatible equipment,

7) hand-written,

8) handshaking,

9) error-checking,

10) error-free.

1.3. Конверсия

Одной из особенностей подъязыка информатики и вычислительной техники является конверсия. В связи с тем, что одни и те же слова могут являться разными частями речи, важно научить студентов правильно определять функцию каждого слова в предложении. Так, например, слово “set” может быть как глаголом, так и существительным, кроме того, оно может выполнять функцию определения:

First of all you should set the date and time.

There is a set of fonts available.

The set up program must be used.

Упражнение 7. Прочитайте, определите, какой частью речи является выделенное слово, и переведите предложения:

1. If a printer malfunctions, you should check the interface cable

2. The operator is the first person to see that there are computer malfunctions.

3. To access information recorded on a disk, a disk drive must be used.

4. You have no access to these data.

5. What units do we use to measure memory capacity?

6. There are some measures to be taken.

7. Disks provide direct access to the necessary data.

8. The central processing unit directs and controls the activity of the hardware.

9. Disk drives are used to handle one or more floppy disks.

10. This box has a handle on the top.

1.4. Синтаксические особенности

• Стремление к краткости изложения приводит к частому использованию различных определительных групп (application program, general purpose computer etc.). По той же причине в тексте часто встречаются комплексы, в которых первый элемент – существительное выполняет функцию, сходную с функцией наречия (например, computer-dependent language- машинно-зависимый язык, user oriented- ориентируемый пользователями).

Упражнение 8. Переведите словосочетания:

1) end-of-file character

2) twentieth-century programmers

3) computer installation

4) key combination

5) product overview

6) recent processor technologies

7) data model

8) printer file

9) non-system drive error

10) incompatible system size

• Обращения авторов к пользователям и программистам приводит к частому использованию личных местоимений, что совсем не характерно для специальной литературы, носящей, в основном, безличный характер. Изложение рекомендаций приводит к широкой употребительности глаголов в повелительном наклонении. Многочисленны случаи употребления инфинитива в функциях обстоятельства цели и определения.

Упражнение 9. Переведите фрагменты предложений:

1. To transfer what you have do the following …

2) Enter … to create a new directory.

3) To completely abandon a command press the Esc key.

4) To see how you make good use of …

5) Use this to check the success of file copy.

6) Specify the calculations to be performed on numbers.

7) To become a good programmer be logical in your approach to the problem.

8) Position the pointer on something, then rapidly press and release the mouse button twice to load a program or to open a document.

9) To prevent the pen drawing all the time there is a device that ….

10) The device to be tested is in front of you.

• В составе сказуемых чрезвычайно распространены модальные глаголы, выражающие возможность, уверенность, сомнение в выполнении действия или его необходимость. Сказуемое часто употребляется в форме страдательного залога.

Упражнение 10.Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на употребление модальных глаголов и страдательного залога:

1) Data must be presented sequentially to the processor.

2) Information in the form of data and programs is known as software.

3) We can see the results on the screen or in the printed form.

4) Computers are made of millions of millions of electronic devices.

5) When data and programs need to be saved for long period of time, they are stored on various storage devices.

6) Information cannot be processed by microprocessor if it is not loaded into the main memory.

7) Programs and data on which the control unit and the ALU operate, must be in the internal memory in order to be processed.

8) After being mounted on a disk drive, disks are kept spinning at a very high and constant speed.

9) When buying a hard disk you should consider the kinds of drive mechanisms and products available.

10) The computer hardware can best be described as actual parts that go together to make up the computer.

Упражнение 11. Переведите предложения на русский язык:

1) If you want to know what files are on your disk, you can use the DIR command.

2) Remember that if the disk is not blank, formatting it destroys any data already on the disk.

3) If you do not have a second internal floppy-disk drive, the drive name B can be used as a second way of accessing the single drive.

4) If there is a batch file called AUTOEXEC.BAT in the ROOT directory when the computer is started up, it will be executed automatically.

5) If the file specification does not begin with a backward slash (\) the first part of the specification is taken to be default, or current directory.
