Lesson eight Text: Air-conditioning
I. Read and translate the text using the vocabulary:
For many years air was introduced into buildings after heating, dehumidifying and, in some cases, cooling it, and we called this process ventilation. Air-conditioning is the treatment of the air in the building so as to make it more comfortable or healthful for humans or more suitable for manufacturing processes.
There are many factors that are important in air-conditioning. They are not only cleaning and circulating of air.
Complete air-conditioning involves the control of the following factors: temperature, humidity, air motion, air distribution, dust, bacteria, odours, toxic gases. The first three are the most important. Air-conditioning system must control all these three factors. Thus it follows that air-conditioning involves heating as well as cooling.
Air-conditioning systems differ in complexity and cost according to the required conditions and the degree of accuracy of control.
Small offices require unit conditioners while multi storey office block, factory, cinema or theatre requires more complex systems. The plant will contain: large cooling compressor, air washer and dehumidifier, heater batteries, filters, fan, automatic control of external temperature and so on.
