Cambridge
1. Unlike Oxford, which is both a university town and an industrial city, Cambridge, as the saying goes is the University. It is situated at a distance of 70 miles from London. The greater part of the city lies on the left bank of the river Cam. And the city got its name because of the river.
2. Cambridge is one of the loveliest towns of England and it looks much more like a country town. It is very green, and presents to a visitor a lot of beautiful buildings, trees, gardens, and bridges.
3. The most famous people of Great Britain studied there. Among them are Newton1, Byron2, Darwin3, etc. King’s college is best known because of the magnificent chapel. Today there are more than 20 colleges in Cambridge. A college is a group of buildings that form a square with a green lawn in the centre. An old tradition does not allow the students to walk on the grass, this is the privilege of professors and headstudents4 only.
4. The university was exclusively for men until 1871 when the first women's college was opened. And it will be many years before5 there are equal numbers of both sexes.
5. Every summer thousands of folk music fans arrive in Cambridge for one of the biggest festivals of folk music in England. Local shop-keepers look forward to the festival. For them, it means a big increase in the number of customers.
6. A few miles from Cambridge stands one of the most romantic houses in England, Sawston Hall. It is the home of Huddlestones, one of the old Catholic families of England.
