V: Would you be so kind as to tell me a few things about the currency in Britain? It's always so hard to use foreign money at first.

A: Now the monetary system in our country is quite simple very much like the decimal systems of other countries; one hundred pence make a pound.

V: What paper money is there in circulation?

A: The Bank of England issues one-, five-, ten- and twenty-pound notes.

V: And the coins?

A: These are the halfpenny, the penny, and coins for twopence, fivepence, tenpence and fifty pence.

V: As far as I know, only a few years ago the British were hesitating whether to go decimal... What was the old system like?

A: Well, for the unsophisticated foreigner it really seemed to be rather complicated... One pound was worth twenty shillings. There were twelve pennies in a shilling, and two halfpennies, or four farthings, in a penny.

V: Why did pounds, shillings and pence have £ s.d. as their abbreviations?

A: That seems to be a poser for any foreigner. You see, the £ symbol stands for the Latin libra "pound"; s. is from the Latin solidus "solid" (but not from the English "shilling"); d. is short for the Latin "denarius".

V: I’ve come across designations like 10/-; 5/6,-/9. Was that pounds or shillings?

A: That was just another way of abbreviating small sums: 10/- — 10 shillings; 5/6² — 5 shillings and sixpence, and -/9 — just ninepence.

V: What was the paper money issued?

A: The Bank of England issued banknotes for 10s., £ 1. £ 5, and £10.

V: And what were the coins?

A: The silver coins were the sixpence, the shilling, the florin — a two-shilling piece — and the halfcrown, worth two shillings and sixpence, the copper coins being the farthing, the halfpenny and the penny.

V: I remember seeing a very unusual coin — twelve-sided. How much was that one?

A: Oh, I forgot to mention it; that was the threepenny bit.

V: I know there was the monetary unit guinea. How much was that?

A: Well, you see, the guinea was worth twenty-one shillings. Quite some time ago, there was a gold coin for the value, but now there is no such coin or banknote. The name itself is now used rather seldom. It's mostly the doctors, tailors and other professional men that occasionally name their fees in guineas...

The principal unit of currency in the USA is the dollar. The name dollar itself is not American. It comes from the German Thaler, Daler. The latter is in its own turn an abbreviation of Joachimsthaler – the designation of silver coins formerly made in Joachimsthal, a small town in Bohemia.

The US Government issues the following bills: bills for one dollar, two dollars, five dollars, ten dollars, twenty dollars, fifty dollars and one hundred dollars.

One dollar (written $ 1 or $ 1) is worth 100 cents (the cent is written ¢ or c: 50 ¢, 50 c). The coins are the cent, the nickel (5 ¢), the dime (10 ¢), the quarter (25 ¢) and the half dollar (50 ¢). The cent is colloquially called a penny. One-cent coins are made of bronze, five-cent coins – of nickel. Dimes, quarters and half-dollar are made of silver. The dollar may be either a paper bill or a silver coin.

J.: Yes. I remember. What was it? A furniture factory?

M.: No, interior designing company. Rather like the place I worked at when we lived in Glasgow.

J.: Oh, yes, of course. I remember now. Do you feel optimistic about it?

M.: Well, I wouldn't say I exactly feel optimistic, but at least my training and experience have given me a chance. Maybe I'll get short-listed. But the interview — that's difficult.

J.: Why, for goodness sake? You are not scared of interviews, are you?

M.: No. But I don't feel at my best at interviews. I feel off balance when they start asking me questions.

J.: Oh, I shouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. The job is absolutely made for you. I don't think they'll get many applicants with similar qualifications.

M.: Well. We'll see.

J.: By the way, what's the pay like?

M.: The pay is good. Nearly twice what I used to get in Glasgow.

J.: We'll get a big difference if you get the job. We'll be loaded!

M.: I don't know about loaded. We need twice as much to be loaded.

J.: Is the money the main reason for your applying?

M.: One of the reasons. Probably not the main one.

J.: What was that then?

M.: Well, I don't know. I'd like to put a few ideas into practice. Do you remember Bill: my boss in Glasgow?

J.: Yes, why?

M.: He was very understanding and pleasant to work for, but it took him so long to come round to a new idea. By the time he decided to try it out it was no longer new.

J.: That didn't suit you.

M: It didn't really bother me, but I still have a couple of things that I want to put into practice.

J.: Good for you. I hope you fed them everything about your qualifications and experience in your application?

M.: Yes, of course. But one mustn't sound too good, you know. So I tried to be factual and emphasize the most important points.

J.: I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

M.: Thanks, I need it.
